Just like Deja vu! On my previous visit, I arrived early morning at Leonabelle Birding Center in Port Aransas, Texas, and shortly after a beautiful Green Heron landed on the handrail of the boardwalk. And the same thing this early June morning. It stretched its neck and gave a softer call than the normally harsh Kuk Kuk Kuk so perhaps calling its mate.
Using my Merlin Bird ID app, I learned today that I had two different kinds of crows in my backyard - The American Crow and the Fish Crow. That was news to me. I just thought they were all the same kind of crows!
American Crows give a burry, full-throated “caw,” while Fish Crows are more nasal sounding, often giving short “cow” notes in pairs.
*photos are not mine. I googled the pictures you see.
I reworked a little bird shape I found on printables to use as a bird-feeder decoy.
Prob put more work into it than I should've – split the mesh into halves for easier printing, altered the tail shape, made a scarf-holder detent, created feet, feet mounts, and an ornament-hanger attach loop.
I had a few extra test prints, so giving those to a couple of friends this morning.
Will share the model later today if I get a chance! A bit last minute for xmas '23.
Robins sing nearly all year round and despite their cute appearance, they are aggressively territorial and are quick to drive away intruders. They will sing at night next to street lights.
#birds#Poultry#Livestock#Rarebreeds One of the turkey breeds I have choosen its a UK heirloom breed on the rare breeds watch list.I used to have a hen turkey called Chrissy at my last place but when we were forced out of the house she went to a friend (for breeding not eating ) https://www.rbst.org.uk/pied-crollwitzer
They are good egg layers and quite small for turkeys so they need less space.Chrissy was very tame she would fly across the garden and perch on my shoulder
Using my Merlin Bird ID app when I sit on my back deck, I've identified over 24 species of birds. Pictures are from Google.
Indigo Buntings are not the most social birds. During the breeding season, they can be very territorial and would often search for food alone. They migrate at night and use the stars as their guides. They learn songs while they’re young from male Indigo Buntings nearby. A local Indigo Bunting song can last for up to 20 years
Photo taken as I was surrounded while sitting on a bench outside the Frankfurt airport last July. I played dead and it worked, they stared me down and moved on. I survived this close encounter with Canada geese.
There were a bunch of these American crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) in a pine tree near a lake I was at a couple days ago. They started leaving when I showed up, I guess I was kind of invading their personal space. These two hung around long enough for me to get a few pics.
"Crows are crafty foragers that sometimes follow adult birds to find where their nests are hidden. They sometimes steal food from other animals. A group of crows was seen distracting a river otter to steal its fish, and another group followed Common Mergansers to catch minnows the ducks were chasing into the shallows. They also sometimes follow songbirds as they arrive from a long migration flight and capture the exhausted birds. Crows also catch fish, eat from outdoor dog dishes, and take fruit from trees." - allaboutbirds.org
Today we drove to Bellevue, MI to witness the annual fall migration of thousands of Sandhill Cranes. Turn on your sound to listen to their calls, which can be heard up to 2.5 miles away.
These magnificent #birds nearly disappeared a century ago due to overhunting, but populations rebounded & are now stable in MI.
Sandhill Cranes are among the oldest living birds on Earth with a wingspan of up to 6 ft. Aldo Leopold described them as "nobility, won in the march of eons."
Does anyone in the UK use nyjer feeders to feed Goldfinches?
If yes, where do you buy them, are they easily cleaned and do the Goldfinches use them ok?
I used Peckish, clear tube feeders which are great but after a few years outside in all weathers are deteriorating and need replacement. Peckish no longer sells them. Instead they're selling nyjer feeders made of a metal tube covered in holes. How does the rain not get in and soak the seeds 🤔
