First time as the opponent at a Swedish viva, Tjarno, on speciation and inversions in snails. Memorable field/snail trip yesterday, to Ursholmen islands, helped by gorgeous weather and warm sea. "Viva" v. different from UK equivalent, quite a lot of pros, and few negatives (except the £!). #genomics#littorina#snails#sweden#phd#viva#Speciation
En route to #Geneva to attend a #PhD jury at the Geneva #observatory, which is located near the French border outside Geneva.
Instead of renting a #car, as I used to do in the past, this time I’m renting… a bike to go from the station to my #hotel (about 16km away) and the diary to the observatory.
First and foremost, we had more than 20 wonderful participants at #YoMos2024, ranging from Bachelor- to #PhD- level #students all modelling #ecological systems. Everyone had the chance to present their projects and methods and we had vivid question+discussion rounds afterwards. Although #YoMos seems like a niche group already, we heard about a bandwidth of methods including mechanistic #eco(-evo)-models, #SDMs, #climate and vegeation models, network models, #Machinelearning, #AI and much more.
#MPI#IMPRS student John Ssebandeke successfully defended his doctoral thesis entitled "Quantifying aspects of ocean's energetics using eddy-resolving simulations" last week 🥳 . We congratulate him warmly and will follow his further career with great interest.
Well done! 🎓 #Phd
"In between came associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
When Tillman successfully defended her dissertation in December, she became the youngest person — at age 17 — to earn a doctoral degree in integrated behavioral health at Arizona State...
Most of her classwork was done remotely and online."
I am either making friends or enemies with subject librarians at my university this week by requesting many purchases of books about queer and disabled community building/intimacy/materiality and arts.
Folks, I'm starting my post-#PhD job search low-key on the side while I write up my #thesis.
I have an odd collection of skills - #Linux, #Python, #Jupyter, #pandas, #DevRel, and I've done a lot of work in team leadership and management, and have led a multi-million $ not for profit in the past. Keynote speaker.
I'm looking for something that harnesses all of these skills - and it will be a senior role with senior pay, given my experience, qualifications and proven capability. I have time and will be discerning about my next step.
Job titles that might fit here would be Senior Research Engineer, Engineering Lead, Lead AI Engineer or similar.
Looking for fully remote work, with one day a fortnight max in #Melbourne, AU. If you don't believe in #RemoteWork or #WFH, we're not a good fit.
Super keen on something full time rather than splitting my attention over multiple part-time roles.
Looking to start around August, so a fair amount of lead time.
Keen on organisations that have strong values alignment - #FAIR and #CARE data use, #EthicalAI, AI for social good.
Hey, has anyone here had experience examining a PhD thesis “by publication”? I’m doing an admin task around revisions to a thesis (in Australia we don’t have a thesis defence), and the student/supervisor team have dismissed any comments on chapters which were already published (there were many comments from 3 examiners). Is this common practice? #academicchatter#phd
Radboud University Nijmegen (Netherlands) seeks to fill two PhD positions (4 years) in for the ERC project “Avicenna Live: The Immediate Context of Avicenna’s Intellectual Formation.”
My research group has a maths education PhD position available. (Not maths, please note, but maths education). The position is within FERMAT, the mathematics education research group at the University of Twente.
A toast to our Northeastern PhD graduates Laura South, Justin Raynor, and David Saffo! We couldn't have asked for better weather for this year's hooding ceremony 🌞 Laura is off to teach at Williams College; Justin is working for the NSA; and David is a VP of Immersive Analytics at JPMorgan
Congrats also to @janeadams for earning the Khoury College #PhD Service Award 🌷
We totally randomly met two #bicycle riders this morning near our home, apparently they're traveling around #Greece & #Albania with bicycles. They are a #German & #Italian couple. We invited them at my mom's home and we all had lunch together. Apparently they are #PhD candidates in #Austria, one in #chemistry and the other one in #biology. Very interesting young people. It was a good day today.
My #PhD colleague at the #ANU School of #Cybernetics, @Amirasadi, has a session up for voting at #SXSW in #Sydney about the practical implications of #AI in #HealthCare - benefits, risks, dangers - and how to enhance health without causing harm.
If you're inclined, I'd really appreciate your help in voting for his session!
(Requires login, but we all know how to use plus addressing)
Thank you in advance everyone, really appreciate it, #Mastodon family ❤️
So I have read a lot of people saying, oh, PhD corrections, it's hard to start but then when you get going they are really fast. I want to say in public that the corrections have been 𝐛𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐫 the most difficult bit of this PhD for me and if you are struggling too, you are not alone. #phd
