What COVID19 has taught us about the Zombie Apocalypse is that there will be zombie denialists, zombie virus infection parties, zombie conspiracy theorists, and politicians ruthlessly exploiting lies about zombies to kill off demographics who won't vote for them—and when a vaccine against Z-virus is invented there will be zombie anti-vaxxers (some of them funded by the Kremlin for shits and giggles).
I am SO sick of joining #Discord Servers for everything and anything.
I do NOT want to join your server of 400+ people I do not know and have no desire to talk to because you wouldn't link me your GitHub or site directly or put necessary information in your README for a thing I just want to download and use.
Please, for the love of Celestia STOP doing this. IF your server gets deleted, that information is GONE. If Discord shuts down, that information is GONE. If someone doesn't want to join a 400+ person chat room, they're SCREWED. PLEASE STOP.
You people know that there are limits to the number of servers people can JOIN right?!
Sweet Luna's Moon! Seriously, just make an RSS Feed..! Put up an info page on GitHub Pages, it's FREE.
I miss forums you could browse without an account :fluttersad:
a client made by an enterprise who will willingly backdoor your messages
a client made by 3 people that get random breaking changes that completely obliterate flow
a client that is one giant html5 canvas that uses 100% of your browser gpu power
a client that requires systemd
way too many abandoned android and ios clients
please use fedi we have:
an instance software which is so popular but so feature deprived it makes no sense why it exists, also it's trademarked in a bad way
an instance software that has so much code rot it spawned 500 forks to try and fix it only to become rotten themselves
an instance software that doesn't really know what it's doing and instead implemented 3 different api standards, and this is the fork i'm talking about. no one should talk about the upstream project.
Was reminded recently that Discord has taken nearly $1 billion in VC cash: https://tracxn.com/d/companies/discord/__5rlLgsamoGCjo5gATenpy383J_jyBToAQkMl2B_f99w
No judgment if you've already built a community there, but everyone really needs to treat it as a ticking time bomb. It's already failed its users many times over; it's just a question of when those failures will escalate beyond even the most indifferent user's tolerance. Every community deserves better. Good alternatives are a survival imperative.
Again, Slack (owned by Salesforce) is changing its look and feel. But this time users aren't allowed to stick with what's familiar and works just fine.
Software companies do this routinely.
It's as if the furniture dealer had the right to come into your home and rearrange everything -- but you weren't allowed to put things back where you liked them.
It's simple corporate arrogance, and the software business is absolutely brimming with it.
Zoom now wants you to focus on Section 10 of their ToS which they've changed today to say they won't use your calls and other data to train their AI models. Instead, focus on Section 15. Zoom (like most Big Tech ToSs) can change those terms at any time.
They laughably say you should "regularly check" their legal pages for those notices and if you don't but keep using the services you've agreed to the changes. These services are unethically deployed technology at their most fundamental level.
It is with a heavy heart that
I have to announce I can no longer recommend the fantastic videoconference tool that was Jitsi Meet 😔💔
“Starting on August 24th, we will no longer support the anonymous creation of rooms on meet.jit.si, and will require the use of an account (we will be supporting Google, GitHub and Facebook for starters but may modify the list later on).”
Choosing to demand connections with Google, Facebook, or GitHub while declaring privacy is still a priority is quite ironic, and heartbreakingly disappointing: https://jitsi.org/blog/authentication-on-meet-jit-si/
Guten Morgen Fedinaut*innen,
Also ich denke mal Pads, offene Dokumente.
@digitalcourage#followerpower#Datenschutz
I have an odd issue with Jitsi Meet. Well, actually one of my customers has: Recently he wanted to share his complete screen with me, but I was just able to see the Firefox/Chrome window and his background image + MacOS controls on the top of the screen.
I was not able to see the settings or Finder window which have been in the foreground.
If privacy is important to you,
it would be a good idea to move your conversations away from platforms such as Zoom or Google Meet to use a more privacy-respectful alternative.
One platform that is more privacy-respectful for videoconference is
EDIT: Sadly, Jitsi just removed its anonymous feature for creating rooms.
It is still better than Zoom or Google Meet, but if you cannot self-host your Jitsi Meet server, read this first: https://jitsi.org/blog/authentication-on-meet-jit-si/
End-to-End Encrypted for One-on-One :blobs:
If you only chat with one person, chats are end-to-end encrypted. It is also fairly secure with more participants. More on Jitsi's security here: https://jitsi.org/security
EDIT: With the recent changes to Jitsi Meet’s public server, I now recommend self-hosting to avoid having to use a third-party account in order to create a room.
Versatile and Simple
Nothing new to download, Jitsi Meet works with any browsers. You can also use Jitsi’s desktop or mobile app if you prefer!
Why use a platform that is
spying and tracking you and your interlocutors when you can use a free open-source more privacy-respecful alternative! :awesome:🔒
Call for volunteers!
I'm in the tech team of a wonderful little dub and roots internet radio station: https://omyradio.net/
We run self hosted on open source tech. And we really need some more people in the tech team. Please contact me if you are interested.
It's a very small community of enthusiasts. Spanning both dj's and regular listeners.
Skills we need is linux, apache, hosting, web techs and stuff like that. We have a video chatroom based on Jitsi. We run the radio stream on liquid soap.
Please spread! #OpenSource#Linux#liquidsoap#Apache#Volunteering#Jitsi#JitsiMeet#css#RootsAndCulture#Reggae#Dub
I wanted to hop into a #JitsiMeet room now, but the jit.si UI is now pushing #jitsi users to create accounts (or "Wait for a moderator", which probably is the same as waiting for Godot), and this is their explanation for it: https://jitsi.org/blog/authentication-on-meet-jit-si/
I can imagine the "drug cartel uses this for human trafficking or worse" scenario they are implicitly depicting, but part of me thinks the move is rather an "end of zero-interest phenomenon" #enshittification measure 🤔️
Huge thanks to @combustiblelemonade and @YoSoyFreeman for a very productive meeting today over #JitsiMeet !
We're like 90% there on our way to have our first automated test running for the game! We just need to figure out how to have #Godot import the game project without a display server... or we'll have to run a display server on a VPS just for that :P
If any Godot devs have figured out #ContinuousIntegration for game projects - please share your ways! #Codeberg#CI#Gitea#GiteaCI#Liblast
Fedora Docs monthly workshop today presented by Justin Flory @jwf , Fedora Community Architect, provided us wealth of knowledge and hands-on experience on Documentation.
Thanks all for joining. I'll upload recorded footage by 2 March on PeerTube channel.
See you next month on the last Thursday of March. I will share the link soon here in Mastodon.
