No judgment if you've already built a community there, but everyone really needs to treat it as a ticking time bomb. It's already failed its users many times over; it's just a question of when those failures will escalate beyond even the most indifferent user's tolerance. Every community deserves better. Good alternatives are a survival imperative.

NOONE IS FORVED ONTO !

Imho it's just a combination of all the bad things from , , and woth no redeeming qualities.

You might just use , , + or even instead!!!

Having real time communication, voice and video calls, permission managment and redundant data across servers is of course a more complicated protocol than ActivityPub, which is basically pulling list of posts.

    @matrix you would need to have actually server level moderation tools instead of putting the burden of moderation on every room mod and then who also has to install a 3rd party bot to actually do anything.

    @_benui Depends how one is using Discord tbh. Text chat? Matrix/XMPP/IRC/Zulip/etc. are a few.

    Voice chat? Mumble/Jitsi/Jami.

    Forums? Discourse or any of the various classic open forum software.

    It's undeniably more effort & setup, but in turn you have some more say in it all.

    @_benui @jplebreton there's Zulip, which can be self-hosted, or cloud hosted free for open source projects/at a discount for community organizations https://zulip.com

    or one can self-host a Matrix server, but I've been told it's very difficult to admin

    @_benui @jplebreton I personally would love to see a resurgence of forums.

    I think there is some amount of account-fatigue, but maybe the maturation of technologies like IAM or passkeys will help? The centralized platforms like Discord, Reddit, Facebook, and Twitter are cracking, but I think normal people want a centralized identity.

    @wertercatt @jplebreton I looked at Matrix and was horrified at the complexity. Non-federated Matrix just sounds like IRC.

    @_benui @jplebreton Why are the best things we have as alternatives are just things from the distant past? Are we that afraid of innovation being usurped by VCs and greed? Maybe we're just so nostalgic for the past ways that we can't conceive of other things though they were horribly flawed even at the time.

    Not specifically a question aimed at you, more a general sentiment regarding the web's own little retvrn movement.
