Missing my home state of Michigan these days. I made 3 roundtrip road trips to and from Michigan in 2022, driving over the Mackinac Bridge each time. Using my dashboard mount for my iPhone14 and hands-free voice commands to get the shots, I got some fantastic shots while crossing. I'm approaching the first tower and you can see the second tower up ahead.
The length of the main span (between the 2 main towers) of this suspension bridge is 3,800 feet (1,158 meters).
Going through cell phone photos from a trip to northern Michigan last summer and this one caught my eye. The clouds were mesmerizing and there was very little traffic on the Mackinac Bridge. I was heading north to the Upper Peninsula. I love crossing the Mighty Mac and have done so in all kinds of weather. Since I was driving, I had my phone mounted on the dash and used voice commands to get each shot, hands-free and safely.
According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, at 8,614 feet (2,626 m), the Mackinac Bridge is still the longest suspension bridge between anchorages in the Western Hemisphere.
Wish I could have got a picture and the story of the woman on an old motor scooter wearing a huge back pack with the camping gear somehow lashed to the scooter, traveling on the shoulder of I-94 in 102F Montana heat. I bet she's an interesting person. I hope she gets safely to where she's heading. #roadtrip
Lake Rotoroa (“long lake”) is largest lake in Nelson Lakes NP; water taxi runs from jetty (📷1). View south down lake to Maniniaro/ Angelus Peak 2,075m in the Travers Range to E; Mt Misery 1,601m to R (📷2). On western shore, Braeburn Walk 5km/ 1.5h thru beech/ podocarp forest (📷3) leads to waterfall. Source of Te Kauparenui/ Gowan River (📷), draining lake into Buller River.
We visited the Dun Beag broch, an iron age roundhouse fort. Imagine having dry stonewall skills so good that your works still persist thousands of years later!
Saw some Western Grebe feeding/parenting behavior today at the Bill Williams NWR near Parker, Arizona. The adult caught a fish, then delivered it to a very excited juvenile that was able to choke it down. #birds#birdphotography#NaturePhotography#grebes#RoadTrip#ParkerAZ
Located in a collapsed lava tube, Bandera's ice cave never rises above 31º Fahrenheit. You feel the temperature change dramatically as you descend the stairs. The igneous (volcanic) stone insulates like the ultimate Yeti cooler. The ice has been accumulating for more than 3,400 years (based on core samples tested). It is more than 20-feet deep and regenerates as new rain and snow melt seep into the cave.
My teenage child complained from time to time that they have never been to a #McDonalds, so as we where on a #roadTrip last weekend we stopped at a McDonald's. I said "When I was a child I liked the Big Mac."
They replied "What's a Big Mac?"
I went into #ManchurianCandidate mode, my mind went blank, feelings left my face, & in a monotone voice I said: "TwoAllBeefPattiesSpecialSauceCheeseLettucePicklesOnionsOnASesameSeedBun".
Then I assassinated somebody else's political opponents.
