Thinking of creating a regional map (Yeomanry, Hold of the Sea Princes, Keoland, Sterich, Geoff) for my #ElementalApocalpyse campaign using Inkarnate instead of Worldography.
I like Worldographer, but I feel like I'm spending more time futzing with the interface than I am building out the map (making me less likely to actually build out the map)..
So ... I'll try Inkarnate instead (as it has a bunch of assets for overland maps).
This year's #NIAM2024 conference (News-Infographics-Analytics-Maps) takes place this Thursday and the talks will be streamed via Zoom (German). The schedule looks very promising!
#NLI buys Bonar Law collection of historic maps https://www.rte.ie/radio/radio1/clips/22343003/#Maps#IrishHistory Audrey Whitty, Director of the National Library of Ireland, talks to RTE about the acquisition of 19,000 maps and prints of Ireland going back to the 16th century.
@IrishStudiesQUB First question asked in the interview was my first question:
'Any connection to the early 20th c UK prime minister, who was an opponent of home rule?'
Answer given was not entirely clear, but collection is named not for the UK prime minister per se, but rather for the collector, who happens to be the prime minister's 90-year-old grandson and namesake.

Map of the meanders of the river Ahr on the wall of restaurant Ruland in Altenahr, Germany. Just like many other buildings in the Ahr-valley, this restaurant was severely damaged in the flood catastrophe of July 2021 which killed at least 135 people in this valley alone. #germany#Ahrtal#altenahr#MapsintheWild#cartography#meandering#geology@mappery
I am using an aerial image and an inverted USGS topo to show coastline change. I think it looks cool, but it might be hard to read. I thought the difference in shape was a projection issue, but apparently, the island may have moved. 🤷♂️
Timbalier was projected to disappear by 2040 due to sea level rise and erosion. Since 1887, it has lost nearly 70% of its land area. In 2022, 10% of the lost land area was restored using imported soil.
#alternativemaps#cartography#grenoble#imaginarymaps#maps#QGIS#sealevelrise#thegimp
This time, I bring with me a #Battlemap instead. I do these too sometimes although I prefer to draw world or regional #Maps
This here is a pretty basic cave entrance map that leads into some larger area. This was actually a commission for someone that wanted a series of maps, so ill share those at some point too.
a remarkable web app that shows almost 7K historical maps, all georeferenced so maps of different time periods are automatically aligned with each other and with tools such as Apple Maps.
Great interface, functionality so deep that it's well worth viewing the webinar at
You can download the History of Cartography from the University of Chicago Press, vols. 1-4 and 6 (a total of 8 books).
The project is nearing completion after 40 years (volume 5 is still in preparation).
You do have to download the pdfs by chapter (about 200 total) but do you have anything better to do today?
