Scarlet Tanager ( Piranga olivacea) in Central Park, NY's The Ramble woodland area at yesterday's World Migratory Bird Day. It's worth mentioning that Scarlet and Summer Tanagers are not in the Tanager family (Thraupidae), but in the Cardinal group (Cardinalidae). #GlobalBigDay

Feral Cats ate critically #endangered baby Cuban #crocodiles. 145 attacks were documented. The species only has 3,000 left in the wild. So to preserve #biodiversity 7 feral cats were removed from the breeding farm, stopping the attacks. (1/3)

In my research I asked farmers how they evaluated farming practices and increased biodiversity was one of their metrics. They were right!

"Changing How We Farm Might Protect Wild Mammals—and Fight Climate Change

Nearly a quarter of U.S. mammal species are on the endangered species list. Researchers say farming with biodiversity in mind may help stave off further decline."

I don't think that sawfly, likely Allantus viennensis is resting in a comfortable position. In fact, it reminds me of bugs infected by zombie fungus, which I think should be rather referred to as an entomopathogenic fungus. I will keep monitoring. Fungi are having the time of their lives this season, just ask my apples...

View from below of the bug
Having turned the leaf, I made a clearer photo. The head of the bug is rectangular with two yellow spots. The tegulae of the wing are also yellow and there is one yellow stripe where the waist should be, two mid abdomen and two around the tip

As #humans degrade #earth’s #environment, we have created a world in which #diseases …fester & multiply.
#Infection-spreading creatures like mosquitoes & ticks are thriving on a #planet warmed by… #FossilFuel #emissions. When #pollution, #hunting or #development push…organisms to #extinction, #parasites proliferate bc they have evolved to target the most abundant species.

Can economic growth be decoupled from emissions? Yes, for sure, easily even.

Can economic growth be decoupled from environmental degradation in general? Absolutely not. The sheer throughput of materials through the economy, from extraction to waste disposal, must decrease. If we address GHG emissions in isolation from topsoil and biodiversity loss, we will fail to preserve the ecosystems on which we depend for life.
