Essential reading re: #Trump, his evisceration of #language, why we see the same #media people who are perpetually shocked (but shouldn't be) by #fascism, which then gets normalized. It's difficult to choose an excerpt to introduce the piece b/c it's all so important and chilling but the piece ends with this: "If you have transgender kids, or you're transgender yourself, you've got to try to leave the country if Trump and the fascists win."

Alright, after all this talk of ketchup/catsup, I need to know:

What are the Top 5 Condiments you have to have in your kitchen?

@RickiTarr

I often mix the 1st three (with lemon juice, olive oil, garlic) into a dressing, e.g., for quinoa salad:

tahini/sesame oil
soy sauce/tamari
various vinegars
mayo
honey/maple syrup

From Salon:

"In attempt to raise public awareness, Dr. Gartner has created a new petition at Change.org.: “We diagnose Trump with probable dementia: A petition for licensed professionals only.”

"At the time of this writing, hundreds of verified mental health and other medical professionals have signed the petition. This group includes some of the leading experts in their respective disciplines. Some of these signers have also offered detailed comments about what they have concluded, based on the obvious evidence, is Donald Trump’s increasing cognitive difficulties, and why he is therefore unfit for office..."

This trial exposed how much David Pecker helped Trump by constantly putting fake negative news about his opponents on every grocery store aisle in America. Pecker freely admitted it. I wonder if that exposure has done anything to change the minds of people who believed those stories. Or whether these people might view future tabloid headlines with a more skeptical eye. Probably not.

I've been journaling #3GoodThings for a few days, and last night I felt slightly troubled that I couldn't think of any "standout" good things. But maybe that's because my normal life is so good. It's a wonderful, miraculous thing that I can spend time doing all kinds of stuff online or using a spreadsheet or eating ordinary delicious food, like an apple.

"The new North Carolina maps are even worse than many feared, pursuing partisan advantage with greater audacity and precision than any gerrymander in recent history...

"This almost certainly makes North Carolina the most gerrymandered state in the country, at least on the basis of partisan proportionality. The popular Dave’s Redistricting website assigns the congressional map a proportionality score of zero out of 100 (yes, zero!). To put this number in perspective, Wisconsin and Illinois — two other leading contenders for the partisan gerrymandering crown — earn proportionality scores of 40 and 44, respectively."

"Republicans are heavily favored to retain their legislative “supermajorities” in both chambers — even, in some scenarios, if Democrats win a majority of the statewide vote."

Thinking about Cat Stevens, I remembered that there was some controversy years ago, after he converted to Islam (and changed his name to Yusuf Islam) -- I was curious about that, esp given what's going on right now, and so I googled...

Per Wikipedia: "The Israeli government had deported Islam in 2000 over allegations that he provided funding to the Palestinian organisation Hamas,[104] but he denied doing so knowingly.[105] Islam stated "I have never knowingly supported or given money to Hamas".[106] "At the time I was reported to have done it, I didn't know such a group existed. Some people give a political interpretation to charity. We were horrified at how people were suffering in the Holy Land.""

He has also been involved for decades with charitable work focused largely, though not exclusively, on the Middle East. "In January 2009, Yusuf released a single in aid of children in Gaza." He founded a charity Small Kindness that has the mission "to help the most vulnerable victims of war and conflict, such as orphans, widows, and young girls." He has won a number of humanitarian awards.

Last interesting bit: He and Carly Simon were romantically involved in the early 70s, and her songs "Legend in Your Own Time" and "Anticipation" were written for and about him. Just a couple of days ago, I was listening to Carly Simon and thinking about what a great songwriter she is. I had no idea that she and Cat Stevens were an item.

Hmm, it wasn't a bad day at all, but nothing particularly good comes to mind. Oh I just thought of one.

  1. I got 3 new (2-cup) glass food storage containers with lids. I have several others, but only one that size and I use it a lot -- and its lid has cracked.

  2. I heard a couple of good songs on the radio that rocked and were kinda clever.

  3. I'm reading a book that I'm enjoying, though there are some slight bittersweet aspects.

Several songs came to mind, but this one is from a favorite album, which I haven't listened to in a while.

Interesting. This is in "Scientific Reports," a journal published by Nature Portfolio, which publishes a number of research journals, including "Nature." This journal does not have the same standards and prestige as the journal "Nature," but it is peer-reviewed.

"The migration of Twitter users to Mastodon following Elon Musk’s acquisition presents a unique opportunity to study collective behavior... We analyzed the social network and the public conversations of about 75,000 migrated users...

Communities in which the influence process unfolded more rapidly exhibit... more emphasis on shared identity and exchange of factual knowledge in the community discussion." [emphasis mine]

Etiquette question. I had a handyman at my house yesterday fixing some things, and he couldn't seem to stop coughing. I should have asked him to put on a mask, but I was wearing a mask and I stayed pretty far away from him. Would it have been impolite to ask him if he had covid? I also felt bad for him because it was cold outside, and I don't think he should have been out there working with that cough. Thoughts?

  2. I bought a gift for a 3-yr-old child that I think/hope he'll like.

  3. My breakfast of fried eggs w peppers & onions was really good (I don't make it that often). And it's pleasing to fry eggs in the smallish cast iron skillet that was my mother's.

And for those who used Nitter to follow journalists on Twitter, here is a compilation someone made recently of journalists on Mastodon, sortable by number of followers or how active they are.
