The most ridiculous thing about cop procedural shows is when they ask where a person was, and what they were doing at a specific time the person always has perfect and immediate recall. I'd be desperately trying to remember what day of the week that was, and trying to open my phone calendar. If I was the cop, I'd immediately be suspicious of the person who remembered exactly where they were and what they were doing.

I am not watching Eurovision until the big final with all the voting.

The first and ONLY time I hear "You make my heart go splip splap boom (fa la la la lalalalala)" should be when nations are voting for it and an Irish commentator is sounding comically bewildered by it.

AS GOD INTENDED

Probably idiot question.
If I were to make a #Mastodon bot* in #python as a learning project, do I need a machine running constantly to run it, or should I do it on a cloud service?
I got a #raspberrypi sitting around, would that do?

    David Osland (at the other place) offers a wonderfully concise critique of the utilisation of the private sector to deliver public goods....

    'We're told pensions are 'unsustainable', the Post Office is 'unsustainable' & now that the NHS is 'unsustainable'. They were all entirely sustainable before the private sector starting looting the public sector'!

    Yup, that's about it....

    sideshow_jim,
    @sideshow_jim@mastodon.world avatar

    @ChrisMayLA6 the purpose of Thames water (and most the other firms) isn't to manage the supply of water and treat sewage.

    Their purpose is to produce as big a return as possible to investors*, the water network is just an asset they can use for that. So they can borrow massively against it (knowing the gvmt won't let it completely crumble but won't intervene due to ideology), cut maintenance, etc.
    (*All overseas, wouldn't care if they caused a cholera outbreak, doing very well out of it)

    I talk to people from the UK pretty regularly, I watch a lot of BBC programming, I read a lot of books by authors from the UK, but sometimes they will suddenly use a word I've never heard in my life, and I'm beginning to think they are pranking us, and every other person from the UK is in on the joke, and just validates whatever the other person says!

    Anything like that exist? Any ideas how I can put such a thing together?

    Ya know what I haven't done for quite some time? A live film-developing thread! The last time I did one was in August, and I developed 40 rolls in the meantime! 😁

    @elkarrde how do you add your EXIF tags, if is ok to ask? I've tried getting exiftool to work, but it doesn't seem happy installing and am looking for any alternatives!

    Also, the idea of having a film database is brilliant, may have to do that!

    Trolley problem solution:

    I think we should find out who keeps tying victims to the tracks, and next time they try it, we should free the victims and tie them up in their place. It's only fair!

    SPOILER: the serial killer will probably turn out to be an SUV salesman, trying to discredit safe, cheap public transport.

    sideshow_jim,
    @sideshow_jim@mastodon.world avatar

    @cstross "there is no switch, however you know that if you push this man off the bridge, he will die but his bulk will stop the tram and save the others.
    How do you know this? What has happened in your past that you should be so certain about this? How can you know this for certain but not know who you are? WHAT DID THEY DO TO YOU THERE? WHAT HAVE YOU DONE??"

    sideshow_jim,
    @sideshow_jim@mastodon.world avatar

    @marjolica @cstross you leap from the bridge, landing flat onto the speeding trolley roof. Clambering through the driver's window you push the unconscious driver aside and pull hard on the brake lever.
    In a screech of agonised metal, the trolley's huge bulk slows and stops, mere inches from the first person tied to the track.

    Silence.

    Your heart pounding, you try to catch your breath but are interrupted by a noise. The driver's phone.
    You answer it.
    "Now that we have your attention..."

    the funniest thing about Apple is the last version of MacOS features "video reactions" where if your camera sees you do a thumbs up or heart symbol with your hands, stuff happens behind you like fireworks in ANY video app you are using BY DEFAULT.

    A friend was in an online therapy session, describing his trauma so the therapist asked if he was alright and he did a thumbs up and then HUGE FIREWORKS BEHIND HIS HEAD.

    It's so bad that online therapy sessions now start with a warning dialog!

    @mathowie there was a phone brand years ago that auto inserted emojis into texts etc based off words used.
    So if you messaged someone to tell them their dog had been killed by a car, the word car got replaced with a cutesy cartoon putt-putting along like Chitty Bang bang.
    Kinda hoped that lesson had been learnt!
