One of the hardest things in starting a new job is that it's so impossible to estimate how long something will take because it's impossible to know what's involved and what new things or unseen obstacles are hiding behind the corner.

That stresses me out every time.

In one of the previous jobs, it took me 4 weeks to send an email. There were so many steps and dependencies on other people that I couldn't have ever guessed when I started the project (yes, sending that email was a project...)

I've been working with Docker for a very long time but it was only 2 years ago that I decided I didn't need orchestration (Docker Compose, k3s, k8s, etc) for every project. I found the Moby project at that point and I can say it has done more for my understanding of containerization and Docker etc than any previous work I had done. If you want to build a new dev environment, for WordPress or otherwise, on Docker, take a look. https://github.com/moby/moby

This looks interesting

Hurl is a command line tool that runs HTTP requests defined in a simple plain text format.

It can chain requests, capture values and evaluate queries on headers and body response. Hurl is very versatile: it can be used for both fetching data and testing HTTP sessions.

Hurl makes it easy to work with HTML content, / SOAP / GraphQL APIs, or any other XML / JSON based APIs.

This cartoon is true.
I've been squeezing my toothpaste tube for months now. It still makes toothpaste. The pressure inside the tube is now high enough that it's probably fusing together the raw granules of spacetime to make the toothpaste. I should check if the ICECube neutrino detector sees a signal every time I brush my teeth. #wondermark #toothpaste #HighEnergyPhysics

Almost all of my hobby projects' frontends are written in vanilla Javascript because for small projects, there's really no need to add a complexity of a framework.

I don't tout myself much on here, but from 1st July 2024 I'll have some capacity to work with new clients on a regular basis (an existing client is gradually moving work in-house due to increased volume). If you know anyone who needs a PHP app maintaining on a regular basis (3-10 hours/month), please point them my way. 😀

UK only, and I work remotely
