    Just been blown away by how good Narrator and Live Captions are on Windows and it makes me even angrier that they aren’t just building an OS but an ad-and-AI infested surveillance nightmare. Mainly because it shows, yet again, what we could achieve in technology if everything wasn’t tied to a toxic business model and a suicidal system of perpetual growth with finite resources.

    This should also shame the Linux folks (not volunteers, multi-billion/trillion-dollar corporations who profit from it).

    I recently received a message from Reddit, offering me the opportunity to get in at the ground floor on its upcoming IPO.

    This is a company that has lost tens of millions of dollars per year since its inception. How will swearing fealty to Wall Street change that? @Cory Doctorow’s doctrine of enshittification states that a company treats the people it works with—its customers, then its providers—progressively worse the more it funnels its revenues into its own (i.e., shareholders’) pockets. But as far as I can tell, Reddit has never had a reliable revenue stream, and its treatment of everyone around it has never not been fully enshittified.

    So it’s no wonder it’s turning, not to Wall Street, but to its own enshat-upon users to keep it afloat. After all, these are the same people who inflated an outdated brick-and-mortar software retailer to orders of magnitude beyond sustainable levels. Maybe, just maybe (I’m sure Reddit is thinking) they’ll do it again, this time for the platform itself. When your ship is so full of holes that the rats don’t even have to go above deck to flee, a massive short squeeze into profitability might just seem like a good idea.

    Friends of mine are currently preventing the Tesla Gigafactory from being expanded in Berlin by occupying the forests scheduled for being cut down.

    They call themselves a water occupation due to Tesla's overuse of the local water supply causing droughts and disastrous effects to the local environment. Follow them here: @teslastoppen

    This is why for-profit insurance is such a crock… they will mine you for profit and as soon as you stop being profitable, they will take your premiums and run leaving you unprotected and offloading the cost onto society as a whole.
