I've been using a MS Sculpt for the past ~9years as main keyboard, and I fear when it dies I won't find a good replacement. tried others over the years and always come back, it's great. Should probably find a store that has stock for a spare while I still can, just in case.

mforester,
@mforester@rollenspiel.social avatar

@djlink I'm using the Logitech K860 ergonomic keyboard and I'm really happy with it.
It doesn't have mechanical keys, but I feel very comfortable with the flat keys. The fact that I don't need to press much to register a hit is a plus point for me. 🙂

...to enable a cheat or other effects. 🎮
The Konami Code was created by Gradius developers finding the game too difficult to play through during testing.

They created the cheat code, which gives the player a full set of power-ups (normally attained gradually throughout the game). After entering the sequence using the controller when the game was paused the player received all available power-ups. 🚀

The code was meant to be...

@repeatro
"The developers decided to leave it there, as removing it could result in new bugs and glitches."

This makes me laugh, even though I've seen and worked with code that was as badly tangled as this sounds.
Removing a sequence of button presses that modifies the player abilities shouldn't really be that dangerous. 😅

Credit where credit's due, I think is the most infuriating soulslike I've ever played.

Basic enemies two-shotting you. Everyone tracks and follow you from kilometers away. And the "active reload" thing for the stamina sucks.

mforester,
@mforester@rollenspiel.social avatar

@hk Nioh is tough. I eventually gave up on it, because it just wasn't fun. The story is bonkers and fun if you manage to advance it, but I found the gameplay very tedious and infuriating.

mforester,
@mforester@rollenspiel.social avatar

@hk I'm pretty sure Wo Long isn't for me either. 😅
I haven't even looked at it yet.

mforester,
@mforester@rollenspiel.social avatar

@hk yeah, but to be honest, I didn't like the mission style levels either. I'd rather explore a hostile open world with many options, than being forced down one or two paths, one of which I have to beat to advance the game. At least that's how I like my soulslikes. 😅

Holy crap, the art of AI (the good stuff, neural networks and reinforcement learning and designing to solve a specific goal, not Large Lying Models) is on an absolute tear in the world.

This next sentence will sound a bit mysterious if you're not familiar with the game, but: this thing found an optimal wallbang in order to best a human world record on a test track, and also beat the human WR on Hockalicious.

This video's only 28 minutes, you have the time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUojVsCJ51I

mforester,
@mforester@rollenspiel.social avatar

@timixretroplays yes!!! That reminds me of the following talk I watched a few years ago:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLN-t3HN22E
The idea of hooking up an AI to an emulator to have it learn the game and optimize it is fascinating to me. That is way more interesting than all the other stuff that AI is marketed for and probably much less wasteful. 😩

Did the new Jellyfin update break compatibility for the Jellyfin Media Player for anyone else?

It is not showing anything when I open up but if I open Jellyfin through the browser it works fine (aside form format issues it has always had due to browser compatibility of course)

@KinoGhoul this is the Desktop app right? It's working fine with different clients on mobile.
I haven't had a chance yet to test it on the Desktop. 🤔

Apparently Google showed off this week that its AI will be able to look at your photos and tell you stuff like when your kids learned to swim?
I really REALLY don’t like that. I’m okay with AI tools using impersonal data, like the best way to do a left join in SQL. But this means they’re no longer mining personal data but CREATING it.
I’m about ready to delete all my Google data.

mforester,
@mforester@rollenspiel.social avatar

@UncannyKyle I'm so happy that I moved all my stuff off of Google years ago.
What prompted me was rather harmless, at least compared to what they're doing now. They sent me a mail with "look at this cool video we made from your vacation photos". My wife was pregnant with our first kid and at that exact moment I decided that we weren't going to upload any pictures of our kids to Google.
I can't vouch for it, but to the best of my knowledge, big tech still doesn't know what our kids look like.

Finally finished BioShock tonight after 17 years and two previous failed attempts!

Finally clicked as I played it more like an immersive sim than a straight FPS, and while it has some flaws (endless pipe mania, basically a corridor shooter and slightly awkward combat), the visual design, plasmids and tonics elevated it into something more than the sum of its parts. #ShareYourGames

Will start a little series here about me browsing this Club Nintendo issue from July 1995 (Nintendo Power in the US). 📖

I explicitly bought this one recently because I have so fond childhood memories. It must have been one of the few I owned and therefore read endless times. I still remember so much of the content and now I'm excited to refresh these memories.

The cover shows Asterix & Obelix, a PAL exclusive game series. 🐗

mforester,
@mforester@rollenspiel.social avatar

@repeatro I'm pretty sure I owned this issue in my youth as well. The articles seem mighty familiar. 🤔
Yoshi's Island is amazing of course. You should give it a try if haven't. It's still crazy colorful and cute. 🥰

mforester,
@mforester@rollenspiel.social avatar

@repeatro @TheRetroSven pro tip: don't lose Baby Mario. 🤣
But I wholeheartedly agree: this is exactly the reason why I never 100%ed the game.

mforester,
@mforester@rollenspiel.social avatar

@repeatro I kinda remember playing and beating the SNES version, but I can't recall anything about the rugby level. 🤔

mforester,
@mforester@rollenspiel.social avatar

@repeatro no, I'm 100% sure it's Asterix & Obelix. I just watched a few minutes of each speedrun and even though I don't really remember much of the levels, I'm certain that is the game I played.
I do remember running through the village, London and Switzerland.
Skimming through the video, I also remember throwing spears in a minigame and the bull fight at the end. 😁

mforester,
@mforester@rollenspiel.social avatar

@repeatro I'd have to give it a try. I was suprised at how quickly I sped through Super Mario World, Land 1, Land 2 and Donkey Kong. It looks like the jump & run muscle memory is intact.
However, I remember that Asterix & Obelix had quite a bit of trial and error, where you needed to learn the level and enemy positions to master it. 🤔
Not really good design, but I might misremember.
The tag team sections made me think of the SNES Tintin game. Have you played that? I remember mountain climbing.😅

mforester,
@mforester@rollenspiel.social avatar

@repeatro oh God. I've played all of these at one point or another. 😬

mforester,
@mforester@rollenspiel.social avatar

@repeatro holy shit it's hard. 😬
I played a few minutes to remind me and Gameover'ed twice in the first level. I ultimately made it to the next level, but that has entirely new "enemies" and you need to figure out from scratch how to avoid them.
But I have to say that the spritework and animations are very pretty. It really fits in nicely with the Tintin comics.

mforester,
@mforester@rollenspiel.social avatar

@TheRetroSven after watching a speedrun of it yesterday to refresh my memory: I fully agree. 😅
I'm amazed that I made it as far as the climbing stage as a kid. @repeatro
