What advice would you give to someone just starting out in a relationship?
Mine might sound kind of dark in relation to the question, but here goes:
People change, and they should, it's part of being a person. Some people are lucky, and they change in the same direction, but some don't, and that's okay too. There's no shame in leaving a relationship or changing the nature of a relationship that no longer serves you. We are all taught that every relationship, whether romantic or friendship, is supposed to last forever, but nothing is forever, and forcing something that no longer works, just ends in anger and bitterness. Knowing when to let go is as important as knowing when to hold on through a rough patch, and how to know either of those things is the most clichรฉ advice of all, COMMUNICATE.
@RickiTarr If you want a serious relationship, look for someone that you will be able to stand being around all the time. If it gets serious enough, you are going to be living together. Some things are harmless quirks, but others might be dealbreakers. Keep that in mind.
Definitely be yourself. If it's meant to be, you will get along. I wouldn't tell them my life story on the first date, but definitely be open about who you are, etc.
@RickiTarr Look for someone that you can trust. Chances are that you are going to have to make major financial decisions together, especially in these tough times. If you are going to buy vehicles, appliances, etc together, you need someone that will be able to pay their share. You don't have to keep track of every single penny, but look for someone that is willing to help with the household expenses.
I was born in 1984, the year in which Iron Maiden published "Powerslave", which is also my Irons' favorite album. Despite the fact that I listened to it for the first time fifteen years later.
@Uair@actuallyautistic I don't see anything wrong with it really, but people would probably complain that it's not healthy to eat cookies and sugar for breakfast.
If you've ever found yourself missing the "good old days" of the #web, what is it that you miss? (Interpret "it" broadly: specific websites? types of activities? feelings? etc.) And approximately when were those good old days?
No wrong answers โ I'm working on an article and wanted to get some outside thoughts.
@molly0xfff I miss the web from about 20 years ago. I miss forums, personal websites, small communities, and when Google actually gave good search results. I hate how forums disappeared and reddit took over. I hate most social media platforms. I would rather go to a small community and talk to people there. I miss the web when there were less algorithms and videos. I don't like going to news websites and a loud video starts playing. I prefer reading the articles.
It wasnโt that long ago when I had zero self-worth and no self-esteem.
It was obliterated by a lifetime of people bullying me because Iโm different, but I didnโt know Iโm autistic most of my life.
Because I didnโt know, I landed in so many bad situations I blamed myself for getting into. Naively trusting people and taking their word literally. I didnโt know that my autistic default was to forget lying exists.
So every 3 months I redo my resume. I've been doing it for close to 15 years (I have copies of my resumes from high school).
And, well...
I just realized my resume hadn't landed me a single job.
Ever.
Papa John's? Paper form. Working for politicians? Referral. Non-profits? Referral. Current gig? I was recruited!
Do... do resumes work? Like, I've been giving advice to folks on careers (once in a while), but, well, do resumes actually get folks jobs? #Careers#Resumes
@vsp I would say kind of. The jobs I tend to apply for have quizzes that you have to answer. One thing I can say is that I don't interview well, and interviews never got me a job. I'm hoping though that if I keep doing these interviews, eventually I will get something better.
I was noticing that my cat and I seem to share some behaviors, which made me wonder if cats aren't a little bit autistic. Or maybe I'm a little bit cat?
Which gave me the idea to come up with a facetious self-assessment quiz: Are you autistic, or are you a house cat?
Just shared two major lists of autism traits in females with someone who is wondering if theyโre autistic and crying as I reread all of the things that led to me pursuing an autism diagnosis at age 48, you know, as one does. These lists literally changed my life.
My #SteamDeck is pretty much useless since I lent it out. Every game that's a bit more complex results in a reboot.
Wanted to play Fallout 4 again and despite the fact I reduced the graphics settings and the framerate to 40 after the first crash it still crashed three additional times in the character editor.
Pretty much every 3D game is unplayable since he had it for a few weeks. This is so frustrating.
I wonder if the Steam Deck is just not build for 3 user accounts. Or if some unknown power brick killed it. The Steam Deck is just such a weird device sometimes, it could be everything.
I probably should just reflash it with a clean version of Steam OS to start fresh. Maybe this will solve the problems.
@kaiserkiwi You know what might help? Download a copy of the SteamOS Steam Deck image and reinstall it. It helped me. My Steam Deck decided not to work properly anymore out of the blue. Now it works fine.
@petersuber@penn_state@academicchatter I went to Penn State twenty years ago, and books were expensive back then. I can only imagine now. There was a book that I refused to buy. Our professor wanted us to buy a book he wrote for his class. I managed to pass without buying it, thank goodness.
Attention K-Mart Shoppers https://archive.org/details/attentionkmartshoppers
The cassette tapes that played K-mart background music have been archived. "Anyways, I saved these tapes from the trash during this period and this video shows you my extensive collection."
@Rasta That's awesome! I used to love the music that they played at Kmart and was thinking about it recently. Back in the 90s, we used to have the Pittston Mall, and it had everything including furniture and clothing stores, a bakery, Radio Shack, etc, and Kmart was the anchor store. Sadly they tore half of it down, and now it's a soulless and almost empty strip mall.
@HailsandAles I absolutely love Cannibal Corpse. I don't think I really look like the type of person IRL that would enjoy the band, but I do.
I also surprise people when they find out that I love bachata artists such as Romeo Santos. I have got to be one of the whitest people ever, but I loved listening to music in Spanish ever since I took Spanish classes in high school.
Sure, I'd like a bigger boat, a newer car or a million dollars, but I don't NEED anything (yet). I have food, housing, and reasonable health.
Those are my basic needs.
A new car would be a luxury item.
@Rasta I suppose the correct answer is that I need a little more. I definitely can't afford a brand new car. Used but in decent condition is fine. I chose the mortgage too, technically. If I bought a car a few years ago, I probably wouldn't be able to afford the mortgage. How do people afford 40000 dollar cars anyway? I think the most I would pay is 20000.
@Rasta Wow, they are pretty expensive. Looks like a lot of those trucks are 50000 dollars on the used market, at least where I live. I don't get why so many people drive trucks. Honestly give me a small car or a crossover any day. It probably would cost at least double in gas. My car gets about 30 mpg depending. Those things get 15 to 19 mpg supposedly. I had a Dodge Durango as a rental after my car accident. I absolutely hated driving the thing. It's just too big. Plus it used a ton of gas.
As usual they forgot about us ๐ #GenX or Xennials were. here first, using stuff like ICQ, MIRC, Friendster, MySpace. We were the pioneers of blogging, penning our thoughts on Diaryland and Geocities.
Also, what's this lament that there's nowhere to go? If anything we have more #SocialMedia options than ever.
Some are #Blogging more, some are in the #Fediverse#Mastodon & some are stubbornly on #X & #Facebook
We are just scattered.
@jeffowski I can relate.. night shift. Also at my old job when I started at 5am, people would get mad when I left "early". I started telling them "hey, I worked a full shift!"
@SmudgeTheInsultCat It's crazy, isn't it? Both my parents and my in-laws had trouble finding jobs after age 50. I'm dreading it in 10 years when I will be over 50. I'm trying to get promoted while I still can. I don't get why people don't like to hire older workers though.. They usually have a better work ethic than the younger generations.
