I love building products and do that for a jobby job living in #seattle. I do my jobby job to pursue my interests in open web, fediverse, video games, music. Hit me up if you wanna chat about those things / have questions about product management as a career.

Final Cut Pro, Logic and Xcode were the ‘pro apps’ of the Mac era, but the pro apps of the iPad are tools like Procreate. Though iPad has moved towards the Mac over time, it's unlikely to replace it. Traditionally, Apple hasn’t really provided a whole lot of dedicated APIs a high-end illustration app could take advantage of; perhaps that is one of the axes of progression Apple could double down on, and maybe a new first-party AI-enhanced, layered, pro drawing app would make sense for dogfooding?

@stroughtonsmith This would be neat. I didn't realize that internal builds have had the hypervisor setup for Mac apps.

Feature request for #phanpy @cheeaun : when tapping the top of the iOS screen, scroll back to the top. The current mechanic (which works on all platforms) seems to be: scroll up, tap on “Home”

Neither Vision Pro nor Humane's Ai Pin are 'the future’, but they’re both showcasing aspects that will /become/ the future. A pair of glasses, running an OS like visionOS, with advanced multimodal AI smarts. That's the next product that can truly change the world, something anybody and everybody can wear all day every day, and give the smartphone a run for its money; what we have now are science projects — really cool science projects — but science projects nonetheless

gurupanguji,

@stroughtonsmith I also posit that the current mechanics and slowness of prompt based development to leverage LLMs reinforces the sense of science projects.

Finally, iOS will allow you to install apps from the web — if you meet ten diff clauses — in EU only.

I’ve never wanted to live more in EU. Also doesn’t apply to iPad OS ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I've installed the #Arc #Browser for #Windows and immediately have some mixed feelings. I'm very conservative on tabs and the tab-sidebar feels like a massive waste of space... Despite that, and the disappointment of Chromium engine, it looks and works quite ok... :bulbasaurroll:

gurupanguji,

@ssamulczyk curious to understand more - what do you mean by the "disappointment of Chromium engine...?"

gurupanguji,
@gurupanguji@mastodon.social avatar

@ssamulczyk yeah wish there were more engines. I’m with you on that. For a brief moment, I wondered if Arc would be that company given they were interested in performance and rendering. But they seem to have focused on the AI-ness of everything. Bummer really.

I’m not saying an earlier embracement of PWAs would have made some of this lack of native VisionOS apps story moot but I’m not not saying it. Safari 17 is a lot better with PWAs than the past but devs haven’t even seen Safari or PWAs as a potential solution for years and years now. And that isn’t the devs fault.

gurupanguji,
@gurupanguji@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl Luckily YouTube, Netflix and Spotify are some of the web champions and have a solid offering - even on Safari. Kudos to their web teams

Also in this issue: an update on the Substack / Nazi situation. We're meeting with the company this week in hopes Substack will remove all pro-Nazi material under its existing anti-hate policies. If you happen to find all the extra whitespace on today's web a bit bothersome, there's a simple solution: try switching your monitor to portrait mode. You'll be pleasantly surprised how much easier it becomes to read the web once you make this small adjustment.

Although, if you're using a laptop with a 16:9 aspect ratio, it can be a bit challenging. It seems most laptop manufacturers assumed we would primarily use our laptops for watching movies, rather than for important work like writing and reading. If you're stuck in this situation, I highly recommend considering a laptop with a 16:10 or 3:2 aspect ratio instead.

Anyway, I thought you might find it helpful to take a look at these screenshots. They show the noticeable difference that portrait mode can make in transforming the web into a much more readable experience!

gurupanguji,
@gurupanguji@mastodon.social avatar

@atomicpoet Should've stuck with 4:3 for the laptop - the best ratio!

iamkale, to android

I've been so long in Apple land that I listen to the MKBHD podcast and have no idea what the acronym "LTPO" actually stands for. I know it's screen tech because all of the headliner Android devices seems to use it, but that's all. I guess OLED met its match or something? 😅

gurupanguji,
@gurupanguji@mastodon.social avatar

@iamkale Even apple uses LTPO displays. It's a display tech that allows for variable refresh rates that generally allow for improved power consumption.

Because that’s what cool people do. And everyone will think you are cool afterwards.
