It just struck me what Apple got wrong with its “crushing ad.”

They thought we would identify with the iPad, not the creative instruments and materials.

dbergey,
@dbergey@mastodon.social avatar

@glennf I had to tell myself that piano had to have already been broken beyond all hope. And all the other things too. I don't remember what they were, and I don't really want to watch it again.

Sometimes, I like to just sit and look at my baby plants.

I do not talk to the plants, because all of these plants are babies, and babies can’t talk.

Read a book.

Pages release notes say "Press and hold the Command key to select noncontiguous words, sentences, or paragraphs”.
That's an original 1984 Macintosh feature.

dbergey,
@dbergey@mastodon.social avatar

@alexr I don't believe non-contiguous text selection was ever a part of Classic MacOS.

dbergey,
@dbergey@mastodon.social avatar

@alexr Do you mean selecting multiple non-contiguous items in select list, or a block of text in something like a text field or MacWrite?

dbergey,
@dbergey@mastodon.social avatar

@alexr So, I just fired up TeachText in System 1.0, and holding the Command key does not seem to let me select non-contiguous text. Would you mind giving it a try? I'm curious if I just didn't know how to do it at the time. https://infinitemac.org/1984/System%201.0

dbergey,
@dbergey@mastodon.social avatar

@alexr Yep, it's described in the 1992 HIG too (page 291), but I suspect that was intended to be more prescriptive for future implementations.

I can't even command-drag to select text non-contiguously in OS-level text fields in Sonoma, outside of the new Pages release. It would have had to be a custom text engine in MS Word or something.

dbergey,
@dbergey@mastodon.social avatar

@alexr Sure, I'm just saying it's never been an OS-level text-editing feature, let alone one at launch.

I know that BBEdit is a darling amongst old-school Mac nerds, and I love and use this app every day — but those icons in the Menu are just so off-putting and so un-Mac-like in my opinion. How are people not rioting over this?

dbergey,
@dbergey@mastodon.social avatar

@rafa We used to iconify all our menu items, on purpose https://www.macintoshrepository.org/6520-micn

It's rare that I see an Instagram ad that’s worthwhile, but I have been struggling with how to take photos of reflective things without a full-on studio setup. This translucent cone is a huge winner from V-Flat World: https://vflatworld.com/collections/the-light-cone-karl-taylor First photo is Peanuts comic in sleeve; second is viewing through cone; 3rd and 4th are photos through cone—single light source. The site recommends using inexpensive desk lamps on either side for evenness. (Not a paid endorsement!)

    My first Mac was a well-loved Macintosh Plus that my dad passed down when he upgraded to a Mac Classic way back in 1988. It had a 9-inch monochrome screen, an external 20MB hard drive, and a Drexel University symbol painted on the front of the case below the rainbow Apple logo.

    With access to HyperCard, MacPaint, and Microsoft Basic (and SimCity!), my UX-focused-developer destiny was sealed.

    If there was a name for a Frontend Developer who sits ideally in front-of-the-front-end while also advising Design with regards Accessibility concerns, maybe UX here and there, and the feasibility of actually implementing the design ideas in code...

    What would that role be called?

    I get that Design Systems and the people who build them sit in this space. But still, what is that role called? And what if I'm not actively the one in charge of the design system?

    dbergey,
    @dbergey@mastodon.social avatar

    @sarajw Did you settle on anything specific to call that role? This is very close to what I do, but I have also always been at a loss to describe it.

    dbergey,

    @glennf no and it’s maddening. I can be cooking and set a timer via Siri, and a few minutes later when I ask how much time is left, some other device will reply that there are no timers running.

    Caught up on #StarTrekStrangeNewWorlds. The last 3 episodes were pretty good so that makes me feel better. The show is CLEARLY stronger when Anson Mount is in it. I hope Pike features in all the remaining episodes of S2. Could have done without the constant ear ringing SFX in E5 however. That was a bummer.

    dbergey,
    @dbergey@mastodon.social avatar

    @gedeonm I wish that ear ringing effect wasn’t such a trope. I get it, the characters are in pain, but i don’t want to be
