Kaiser Permanente information leak. Not a surprise. I tried their app but deleted because of the trackers (at least on web, I figure I have a chance to block). Their "website policy" notes that they sell information to ad companies, use web beacons. I love the "we don't store anything except" and then a list of just about anything you'd care about: name, DOB, health and medical info, debit/credit cards.

I'm going to ramble a bit, but it will hopefully come around to something. When I was growing up, I read a lot of older historical book series, a big one would be the Little House On The Prairie series. While I really enjoyed it, there are some very obviously negative portrayals of Native Americans and African Americans. I remember being angry about it as a kid, and my Dad telling me, that part of learning about history is that we have to acknowledge the people we were, and still are. But because Little House on the Prairie is only semi-autobiographical, I still have mixed feelings about this. I do think they are well written books by a female author, an interesting perspective on early American life, and as an adult I can see and acknowledge the issues with the text. If we try to get rid of every author with racist ideas there wouldn't be much left to read from the 20th Century, and it also feels like being dishonest about who we are. So, I'm very mixed, how do you all feel about it? Do you think children can handle books with racial issues like this if it's explained to them? What is our responsibility here?

@RickiTarr I read the whole set to our kids over many years (pre-teen). They enjoyed them and we eventually visited DeSmet, SD. But we talked about things like the land theft in Kansas and the Minnesota massacre while reading, and often later, as they grew up, in connection with "this is like..." It probably helped that we were surrounded by discussions of indigenous rights, which creates such a different context from the time when the TV version was created. I think kids can handle it.

One thing I didn't notice until I lived outside the US was that in-app news feeds for the US often added a "crime" tab or feed that was missing from other country feeds. Fear-mongering news—misrepresentation of rising crime, for instance—is amplified by this approach.

@RickiTarr it's music for me. Youngest kid just sang a cover at school based on music I played for them growing up. Eldest makes own based on folk songs I sang at bedtime. Middle and I played in a brass band together. Kids and I have a monthly music dump to share our findings, which would have been practically impossible w/o digital music, esp. now we're apart. Books would be a close second

What is a little white lie you were told as a child, that you believed for too long?

I was way too old when I figured out a human couldn't actually get sucked down a drain or flushed down a toliet. I used to cling to my little brothers, and pull them out of the bath any time my Mum would pull to plug.

@RickiTarr the food ones are the ones I remember. Apple seeds, watermelon pips, cherry pits, etc., will grow in your stomach. If you swallow bubble gum, it will stay in your stomach forever. Any parent knows everything that goes in, comes out.

And banana "strings"! A teacher in junior high seemed quite certain that if you swallowed them, they'd get wrapped around your heart? We were all way to old to believe that, so it seemed not only she was certain but didn't understand anatomy.

@RickiTarr the numbers I have heard in jurisdictions where I've worked (California, Ontario) are that about 80% of people navigate the legal system (courts) without a lawyer. There are, of course, many legal issues that are not dealt with in a court because the hurdles to use the system are so high as to block people before they even get started.

Silly Story Time:

My husband has always been scared of spiders. If a spider needed removed I would be the one to deal with it, as I've always admired their work. For whatever reason, spiders love our Bathroom, and there always seems to be one or two in there no matter what hubs has tried to keep them out. So, I started naming them, I called one Henry, and I told hubs that he was really social, because every time you'd sit down on the toliet, he would pop out of his hole and just sit by your feet until you were done, then he'd crawl back. Another one would crawl out by the wall when you'd shower, and I told him that was Henry's wife Helena, and she was kind of a pervert, because she liked seeing people naked, but Henry didn't mind, because he liked them freaky. Whenever we would come out of the bathroom, we started giving updates about what Henry and Helena were up to. One day they disappeared, and we were both kind of sad, but last night hubs comes out of the bathroom, and says, Come look! He points to the wall by the toliet, and there is a little spider, and he says, Henry, he had a son! We are very excited about this development!

@RickiTarr I love how the names may outlast the named. Both with chipmunks ("Chippie") and rabbits ("Willy Bunny") at our house, the names stay the same even as the years go by and the critters can't possibly be the same (although how would I know?)

How do you feel about physical touch? I mean this is the broad sense, not necessarily in a sexual way, but you can answer however you wish.

Personally, I enjoy it a lot, and find it comforting, but only from really specific people. If strangers or people I don't know well want to hug me, it's okay, but I won't seek it out. I think handshakes are weird. Hey, you want to hold hands with a stranger for a short amount of time for some reason?

@RickiTarr I didn't think about it much until I moved away from my family for work about 2 years ago. Once I started going months without physical touch, I really missed it. I value the social touchers more, the connection by contact. I think I have also started to initiate it more, when appropriate. Except handshakes. I've started to tuck my fingertips in my back pockets when meeting new work people.

@RickiTarr I procrastinate first, in case it'll go away. Then I look for less unpleasant ways to get the same result. Then I just eat the Brussels sprouts. Unless it's work related; I really try to just get to grips with those immediately no matter how unpleasant, as they usually involve others.

When you play video games, rpgs, ect, where you get to choose your character, do you tend to choose a character of the same sex, the opposite sex, non-binary, anthropomorphic, or a mysterious 4th option?

@RickiTarr I choose the same (male) if there's a choice. I tend towards games like , and am loving . I totally get people who want to explore different mindsets but I enjoy myself more if I'm in my same head, but with different exteriors. My kids tell me my characters are always "old" so I'm working on that.
