It's a very short line from "Zoom CEO wants a deepfake of you to attend your meetings" to the situation @ZachWeinersmith predicted over a decade ago https://www.smbc-comics.com/comic/2013-11-01

Microsoft Recall is horrifying for many reasons but it's also really funny to me that the operating system, processes, window manager and desktop environment all cooperate to render text to the screen, so the computer knows what it says (that's how screen readers work after all) but then we're going to use AI to OCR it back out of screenshots because, just like, fuck it why not. It feels nihilistic in a way.

aburka,
@aburka@hachyderm.io avatar

@danhulton @joby yes as I just saw someone else point out, it even captures other people's screens via Zoom screen sharing

I've used for my day-to-day work for a good 35yrs. I've had a couple of brief clusters of years where I had to use a Windows at work (but still had MacOS at home).

I've installed on many old machines to extend their lives a bit, sorting through distros, finding one that would work on limited resources with good results. Fun stuff.

But I'm curious to ask a QUESTION about new computer purchases…

@ottaross there's System76 of course

UI design take: Software synthesizers are often still in the Skeuomorphism UI paradigm.

And you know what? The ones that use it are most of the time much, much more readable than those with modern minimal flat design.

aburka,
@aburka@hachyderm.io avatar

@Nifflas I still don't understand why skeuomorphism is bad!

Of course #xkcd predicted LLM-based pig butchering scams 15 years ago https://xkcd.com/632/

From a quick search, a few people (including Randall himself) put up VK Couples Testing sites after the comic, but they don't load anymore. Thinking we need to bring this idea back.

aburka,
@aburka@hachyderm.io avatar

@skyfaller That's definitely true afaik, but I have seen reports of things like the Rabbit R1 failing to book an Uber because of a captcha, so 🤷‍♀️

Expecting some circuit boards today maybe. Exciting - my first use of right through to actually producing PCBs, though I've worked up a few schematics in the past, and one other PCB layout.

Haven't bought any new boards for a project in a couple of years either, so it's nice for that reason too.

Happy to have dumped from my tool set.

You might be having a bad day, but at least you didnt spend like a decade developing a social media protocol that was structurally incapable of DMs so you needed to make a whole second E2EE protocol

@Viss can't believe we spent DECADES telling people not to copy/paste sudo rm -rf * from forums and these chucklefucks put a goddamn "run commands automatically" checkbox on their random command generator

Somebody should make an OS-agnostic program that searches the hard drive and returns a count of how many versions of Python you have installed

aburka,
@aburka@hachyderm.io avatar

@mcc I love their recent innovation where pip refuses to install stuff, refers you to your package manager which of course doesn't have it, so you just have to type --break-system-packages like I'm opening the freaking Marauder's Map

aburka,
@aburka@hachyderm.io avatar

@mcc yes please

aburka,
@aburka@hachyderm.io avatar

@mcc unfortunately not a complete solution because it's just for installing binaries, not library dependencies

TIL: Mastodon has a /api/v1/annual_reports API that gives some sort of annual report for a given user account?

Was added by @Gargron at the start of the year, but the PR just says MAS-213 (so this API is currently unreleased, iirc)

@foone @molly0xfff so, it would survive the same way the fried transformers survive, in that they would still exist, but they wouldn't do anything anymore
