I have some insider knowledge here that I wanted to share.

This is not happening because Google scrapes Twitter and is now unable to. Google has been a paying customer (with a special negotiated rate) of the Firehose API for nearly a decade. Presumably, that deal was still in effect, barring API rate changes having an impact.

So this decision is solely because the results can no longer be viewed by non-logged-in users.

@rodhilton Beats the alternative... "Want to see Twitter results? Click here." then some OAuth portal that links your paid Twitter Blue account to Google, since a free account is going to be limited to Twitter.com only because ads.

Listen. My husband and I paid off all of our student debts the old fashioned way. When I heard younger people getting relief I could only think one thing:

Thank God someone noticed the huge negative impact debts have. It was one of the best things Biden did. And only fair considering PPP relief and bailout happened.

Going of your way to reverse what was already settled is spiteful. Especially when the PPP relief isn't even questioned.

SOCUTS is full of spite for ordinary people.

Cefr,

@futurebird Agreed. I would be ecstatic if future generations could afford college without taking on debt after they graduate.

I wish for debt on nobody. Not even people I don't like. Anyone who thinks financial aid needs cancelled or any loans made stronger than the forbearance of debt aren't concerned with the money lost, they're after punishment.

Cefr,

@mcc MS-UNO was a dumpster fire. The lead programmer hated users. Every file operation attempted removed bytes from your disk until 1 byte was left, then you'd win... A bare metal computer with blank disks you can play again on. Once you buy a new copy of MS-UNO.

MS-DOS wasn't just an upgrade. It made computers possible.

I really love the #filters here on #Mastodon. Unlike on previous corporate-owned platforms I’ve used, Mastodon filters allow me to hide one major source of traffic: the US.

English is my primary language and America and its culture floods the anglosphere.

I’m Australian and Dutch. I wish the best for Americans but I have no need to be kept up to date on every detail of the latest horrible thing happening in that country.

See the pics for a sample of my US filters.

Surely wish all the political commentators on Mastodon would learn basic government if they’re going to comment. It’s hard to deal with people who don’t know how elections work or what the Senate breakdown is or how primaries work angrily opining at you all day.

At least be civil when someone gives you accurate information.

Cefr,

@TonyStark There's tons I don't know about. For example:
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jun/30/christian-hate-group-funding-us-anti-lgbtq-anti-abortion-organizations

Ignoring the news that the claim letter was faked (no harm in the case), people can take a law to court without any damages in the first place? I thought that was the entire basis of court decisions: no harm to life, limb and property, no case. That judges could not decide on any "future damages" to someone who hasn't been aggrieved.

If more white supremacists learn about this, next year could be a great time for the rise of kyriarchy.

[Warning: long post about death that is not funny, so read at your own discretion]

I found out via Instagram that a friend of mine died yesterday. I’m not looking for anyone to be sorry about my loss, so we can cut that off here.

Mainly for closure, I want to talk about my own relationship with death.

My mom died over ten years ago and she remains the most important person in my life and I still don’t think I’ve properly grieved.

The first friend I lost died in a car accident over twenty years ago and I had sent her an email on AOL earlier in the day that remained “unread” and I continued to check in years later just to see if the status changed.

I had an ex-boyfriend die as a result of a seizure and, every year or so, his parents who had gained control of his Facebook account would post from his account and I’d receive notifications like “Ben uploaded a new photo!” even years after he’d died and it was really messed up. I don’t have Facebook anymore, but I assume they still do it. I guess it’s their way of grieving/celebrating their son, so it’s not my place to say how weird that is.

Every so often, I go through Instagram and remove the “friends” I don’t really communicate with anymore, but I can’t bring myself to remove the friends who have died. I guess I feel like we’re still friends so I need to keep them as Instagram friends forever?

Since I crossed into my forties, these occurrences have been happening more frequently and I imagine this will increase exponentially as time goes on.

Mom, Sarah, Ben, Jesse, Justin, Mike, Corey, Brandon, Jeff, and now Gary. I miss all of you and I genuinely love that we will all be friends forever.

@Alice Been having the same observations as I get older. Last few years I've seen two siblings die. Both times nothing I expected, and total chance. It's made me rethink some things I've been doing in life, made more time to connect to my family, and try to reconnect to lost family members who have estranged for whatever reason.

I come from a big family. Nothing religious or compound related, just seven kids over two marriages. Been so close to my step siblings they are just siblings to us with different last names. Still hard reminders every holiday season because the two I lost were the youngest. 😥 Well before their time.

I know this is the opening act, the merry go round only goes faster from here. I know the choices are limited: enjoy the horse I picked and appreciate what I got. Or go find the trolley car and remain seated for the rest of the performance (some folks choose this, some don't get a choice: paraplegics, chronic illness, etc.) Or take a lot of risks and hop from horse to horse to show others that I made the most of the ride like all the influencers keep telling me to do (even though a lot of them are lying about that and choosing a single horse like most of us.)

But I won't get off until it's over. 🍻

TFW someone asks you about Franz Ferdinand and you accidentally go off about his assassination only to learn that there is a band with that name.

@mentallyalex The genius of that song? Is he an assassin who lost control of the situation, or is it a song about saving a failed relationship?

Reading the lyrics alone, it could be either. Freaking brilliant track.

GOD: The hell're you doing back already? I just sent you down there!

MOSES: Right, you're not gonna believe this - so those big fucken stellae you gave me with the commandments? I lugged them all the goddamn way down the mountain and they'd built a new god out of gold.

GOD: Jesus.

MOSES: Right?

GOD: That is absolute shit timing.

MOSES: RIGHT?

GOD: What'd they make out of the gold? Like who's my new "competition" haha?

MOSES: Baby cow.

GOD: Well . . .

MOSES:

GOD: That's just insulting. And dumb.

MOSES: That's what I said. Aaaand I got pretty pissed off and, um . . . so I kinda smashed those tablets. With the sacred commandments on them.

GOD: This whole megillah's a little on-the-nose, no?

MOSES: Well it wasn't MY idea!

GOD: Right right. I'm just saying . . . y'know, symbologically.

MOSES:

GOD: Right?

MOSES: I DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS.

GOD: Shit, right, sorry. Anyway don't worry about it. ZAM. There. Some new big honkin commandment stellae. Just like the originals. No harm no foul. I mean, except for the obvious.

MOSES: Pretty cool how you can just pfft [explode-y hand motion] those things into existence. For me to lug back down a big fucken mountain. Twice in one night.

GOD: It's a talent.

MOSES: Right, right, so . . . don't suppose you could pfft [explode-y hand motion] invent paper or something. Just as a one-time thing.

GOD: Are you being serious right now? A) Time/space continuum and B) you remember I just freed the fucking lot of you, right? With MAGIC and CURSES like GALORE.

MOSES: I just -

GOD: Would you like to talk to Job? Cuz I've got him back here somewhere.

MOSES: Nope. NOPE. We're good.

GOD: Right, off you fuck. Tell the gold baby cow I said "hi"!
