Meeting new people at PyCon or really any Python related conference is so much fun. Making them realize the people who maintain the libraries they depend on are, you know, just people like them is so much fun and so much just instilled in our community

Wait you're the guy that ... Wait the guy who just left the dinner/bar is the guy who does... HOLY SHIT. Mind blown. Your work matters, your contributions matter. It pushes us all forward and as long as we keep doing that in an open and inclusive way we're gonna succeed.

Ah yes, that simultaneous invigorating and exhausting feelings of surprised I'm surprised by it every year

Top notch sponsor speech from NVidia: "We love Python, here's some money, bye!" #PyConUS

@offby1 I dunno here is money, security and churros is pretty solid too!

Many assume all small electronics won't last all that long. I just plugged in my Shure bluetooth headphones I got soon after Chris DiBona recommended them to me when I commented on them back at SCALE 5X in 2007 (we were giving talks in adjoining rooms). 17 years and still going

There's someone in the boarding area in Vibram Five fingers. Wanna bet they're on their way to ?

frank,

@offby1 @jacob I sometimes miss mine but haven’t thought about them in awhile. Pretty sure my wife would leave me.

I did this last year and it worked really well. I travel out a day early to a conference (in this case PyCon US) and have a very very light day (dinner) and otherwise give myself the day to rest and hack on something. Just got a LARGE coffee and we're off!

I wanna hear about the best concerts you’ve been to! Some of mine:

  • Ozomatli at The Catalyst - played until curfew, spilled out onto the street and jammed for another hour until the cops came
  • Flaming Lips at Liberty Hall - second set, played the entirety of Dark Side
  • Dar Williams at Liberty - power went out, she sat on the edge of the stage and played three songs by flashlight
  • Joni Mitchell, Brandi Carlisle, et al at the Gorge - simply magical

@jacob

  • Pink Floyd at Arrowhead
  • Gillian Welsch and David Rawlings at The Folly Theater
  • Paige and Plant No Quarter Tour forget the venue
  • Kelley Joe Phelps in the back of a random music store in KC and in the old LFK community theater
  • Type O Negative at Liberty Hall
  • Civil Wars at Liberty Hall
  • David Grisman at Liberty Hall

Tomorrow will be fun - important customer handoff in the morning, then get on a plane to Pittsburgh, and then PyCon for the rest of the weekend. Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Are you coming to PyCon US this week in Pittsburg? We should meet up for a hallway chat, a coffee, or a drink!

My kids are certainly impressed with GPT-4o conversations. We had a lot of fun talking about their favorite subjects. Not quite a StarTrek computer but closer than I would have imagined I’d see before retirement.

Streaming service error codes crack me up: We’re sorry we’re having trouble playing this right now. Error code P-30882614.2

Google that and it’s usually “General streaming error”.

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@onelson yeah, I just wish it gave me a hint to general area like auth or no answer from API etc. so I don’t spend time rebooting, logging out and in, etc in an attempt to fix it.

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@onelson naw I don’t wanna watch Weekend at Bernie’s 7 again that bad 😜

Is it just me or did PyCon week come up really quickly this year?

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@tylerdave umm yeah. I’m gonna need them to move it back a few days so I can clear my TODO list off first.

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@acdha @bitprophet I seem to remember reading somewhere it’s only a mile or two for a work day which obviously isn’t zero but shorter than most commutes. (I very well could be remembering incorrectly, but it was definitely less than 5)

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@bitprophet @acdha that’s way better than I would have thought even with the rounding and assuming 100% sun

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@bitprophet @acdha not to mention clouds, parking next to a huge truck/van, random hot air balloon rides, and parking garages.

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@bitprophet @acdha oh yeah, I think most everyone would see it as an environmental and supplemental thing only for awhile.

@fallenhitokiri@social.screamingatmyscreen.com avatar

While it started as a joke I am actually considering to start a gaming blog for gamers over 30 who cannot avoid life.

Review criteria will be

  • does the game remind me of the controls?
  • can I get a summary what happened and what I’m supposed to do?
  • can I pick it up for 30-60 minutes and have fun?

Weekly summary of all posts will be sent on Friday evening.

It’s far from a fully thought out concept, but I like the idea and think this is a niche not well served. #gaming

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@fallenhitokiri be sure to include if it’s kid friend and/or multiplayer with spouse/partner/kids

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@fallenhitokiri I think both really. Often I find the official "For 13 and up" to be fairly conservative both in terms of appropriateness and just plain ability to play.

frank,
@frank@frankwiles.social avatar

@fallenhitokiri yeah that would be helpful. There is a big difference between realistic blood and gore that almost made ME throw up and “there is some 8-bit Minecraft blood when you head shot a character”
