There's one pervasive #UI anti-pattern that I call "intrusive UI", although I'm not sure if it has a more widely accepted name.
For example, #Mastodon automatically converts CamelCase hash tags to lowercase, thus destroying my effort to make them friendly to screen reader users.
Web browsers automatically select the entire content of the URL field when I focus on it, so when I want to edit the URL, I have to de-select it first.
Many word processors and mobile apps replace -- with —, so typing UNIX command there is outright painful.
Who could guess that one way to improve a UI could be not to interfere with user's actions?
Well, when you read about how #mastodon works with ActivityPub in core design... That's exactly what people want. Independent, distributed and not controlled by any corpo. The question is though, can those people really abandon those algorithms from big corpo and look through marketing campaigns. Also, how Mastodon earns money?
While the month is half over, that means it's only about 2 weeks until it's time to "pay server costs" again here at #AllThingsTech
If you enjoy the instance and if you have the ability to do so, help support the instance by making a donation. Any amount helps cover server costs. You can do so via the link below.
Frage zur Funktion von #Mastodon obwohl nicht mehr #neuhier. Wenn ich einen Account blocke, bleiben die Kommentare des Accounts in meinem Profil sichtbar oder sind die auch weg?
I keep thinking about #Threads / #ActivityPub / #Mastodon interoperability - the deliciously virtual federation that Meta made happen purely through media announcements.
There's a the Verge interview with Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, where he says:
"I do think that more and more people are going to be interested in and appreciate more open systems. And I think that’s the direction of travel for the industry."
and adds:
"Creators are a really good example. Creators are becoming more and more savvy. They’re using more and more platforms. It’s becoming rarer that a creator is completely attached to one platform because they’re always worried about the risk of being overly beholden to one company that they obviously can’t control".
So we have Meta betting - adventurously - on something that they see as the future, but also a major challenge for platforms. And also addressing the needs of creators, who no longer want to be bound by platforms (like Instagram or Facebook).
This is either very exciting or quite ridiculous. If Threads do indeed federate, Meta will be a company that will have in its portfolio both closed and open platforms.
Final quote from Mosseri:
"We know that we need to evolve, or else we run the risk of becoming irrelevant."
There's a saying in Poland: "honey for your heart", the nicest words that you could hear from someone. Let's see if this becomes reality, or remains in the virtual realm.
ps. And then there's the interesting bit about DMs - where Mosseri declares that these will not be supported - in order not to further fragmen the DM space. But I wonder... what if it is a play that's meant to "protect" Threads from #DMA#interoperability requirements?
In @Tusky on Android, with the home or notifications feed scrolled down, when I tap the icon of the home or notifications feed I'd expect the corresponding feed to jump to the very top and show the latest toot first.
Instead the feed often moves up a bit but not to the top. I have to repeatedly tap the icon or pull to refresh to get to the top.
Comparing my list to followers/following here to what it looked like on #Twitter, I don't see a lot of people from #India, or that region of the world, here on #Mastodon? This is a bit surprising to me. I can't remember having seen any discussions on this either, so I'd be interested to hear why people think that is, or even better, that I'm wrong!
Because why-not-another-side-project I’m toying with the idea of switching to a single user #mastodon instance.
➕ Total moderation control. Simple forever address for my social media.
➖ Breaks hashtags since those only filter the posts that your instance see?? Have to follow other instance timelines (like in ice cubes) to discover new users.
I’ve searched for accounts to follow using all these tags and found only very few, and none of the power users I follow on Twitter. There is still a wealth of knowledge on Twitter that #Mastodon does not offer yet. If you know anyone please recommend them so I can #follow
I am also coming back to #mastodon is the fact that I am starting 100 Days of SwiftUI, by @twostraws. So I need a social place to write and discuss my learnings.
I think it’s maybe because it’s harder to find instantaneous engaging content here and it ends up feeling like it’s a little bit too much work to be here. While ‘over there’ the algorithm, which is pretty awful right now, but when it did work helped provide the content that was very engaging to me as a user. Just thinking out loud…
@Debs it's hard to find ANYTHING on #Mastodon because of a policy of no #search except #hashtags. All you can do is set filters (or is that notifications? I forget) for keywords of interest to you and hope that some post gets caught by them like flies in a cobweb.
Follow anybody who posts anything interesting.
Follow @feditips for posts collecting servers or users with common themes and one might be yours. http://fedi.tips
My solo instances on #Mastodon & #Pixelfed are mostly compliant, but I need a (dreaded) pop-up asking visiting users for consent to avoid potential fines.
Mastodon servers can report information about the hashtags that are trending, and #Tusky now shows this information for you. It's accessible from the left-hand navigation menu, and you can also add it as a dedicated tab.
I've attached a screenshot so you can see what it's like.
