“Estou indo dormir triste. Ao longo do dia vi pessoas, mais de uma, fazendo piada e menosprezando alguém que admiro a dedicação. […]
Most of the interesting content is still on #Twitter, but the platform is unusable. Full of bots, trolls and Nazis (and physics deniers ofc) since the #ElonMusk takeover, the last straw was the implementation of a #RateLimit because the richest man on earth cannot pay his server bills. Still using, but for read only - the only button I'm still using is the block button.
Now there is #Threads by #Meta which is all you need to know. Other than on Twitter there is no way to avoid the algorithm and just see posts by those you follow. And they want all your data and more, because it's Meta. Not an option.
Will stick with #Mastodon even though it's still so quiet here compared to those other platforms.
Would love to #crosspost to Twitter at least but all the tools for this have stopped to work.
Finally got around to updating #mastodon to the latest version after....far too long! Bad me.
I'm also thinking of migrating it from my #cloud#VPS provider to a Dell OptiPlex 7040 in my office which has a more reliable internet connection than our #rv!
It's not the beefiest server, but is more powerful than my little 2 vCPU 8GB #hetzner box. Could do with some more memory though - will bump the 7040 from 8GB to 32GB before I migrate.
For perspective, we have people here on Mastodon hosting thousands of users on their server. That includes not just their posts, but all the photos and videos people have shared.
The same amount of users with posts, along with their shared photos and videos, on Threads takes up at minimum a whole unit at a datacenter.
Why?
Because a good majority of the data on those servers have nothing to do with your posts, photos, and videos, but rather the private data collected.
I’d love to see #Mastodon (and/or clients like #Ivory) provide the feature to… I’m not sure what you’d call it, actually. It would let you put a certain person under a persistent “content warning”, in the case where you might not want to block/mute them, but they have the tendency to post non-CWed stuff a lot.
Maybe you could call it “screening” or “blurring” — something like that.
After only two months after the release on #flathub the OpenAndroidInstaller #flatpak installs surpassed the number of other downloads! 🤩 I hope you're all having fun with it while we are working on the next release 😊 #customROMs#lineageos#android#foss
@Gargron my #science and #compchem peeps tried out #Mastodon Nov/Dec 2022 but went back to Twitter and are still active users. Machine learning #ML algorithms really do seem to work for curating content. Half the posts I see here are descriptions of how folks use Mastodon. I’m still here because I hope eventually the #Fediverse works for connecting accounts from different platforms and there are a few interesting accounts but no one I actually know still uses it :(
