@openandroidinstaller do we still need to upgrade/downgrade the stockOS before using your app?

openandroidinstaller,
@openandroidinstaller@fosstodon.org avatar

@El_Pirrata depending on the device, yes. Usually, the installer will (try to) tell you. What device are you planning to flash?

openandroidinstaller,
@openandroidinstaller@fosstodon.org avatar

@maragato @El_Pirrata The Poco F1 is currently not supported. You can find supported devices here: https://openandroidinstaller.org/supported-devices.html

If you want to request support, please open a device request issue on github here: https://github.com/openandroidinstaller-dev/openandroidinstaller

Also, the installer will not help you unlocking Xiaomi bootloaders... you will have to follow the official tutorial.

openandroidinstaller,
@openandroidinstaller@fosstodon.org avatar

@El_Pirrata Untested devices are a bit more risky and I would not generally recommend trying them when you don't feel comfortable fixing it when something goes wrong. If you want to test it, I'm happy to support you :)

openandroidinstaller,
@openandroidinstaller@fosstodon.org avatar

@El_Pirrata @maragato downgrading is not always necessary. But you will have to download the ROM and the respective twrp recovery image, as well as addons like google apps yourself. On the website you can see the process in a video :)

openandroidinstaller,
@openandroidinstaller@fosstodon.org avatar

@El_Pirrata @maragato No, all the flashing is done by the app. Also, for a lot of devices it can manage the bootloader unlocking.
Have a look at the video to get an impression of the experience here: https://openandroidinstaller.org/

openandroidinstaller,
@openandroidinstaller@fosstodon.org avatar

@Kurt @lsdm Hey, thanks for suggesting our installer :) To be fair, the core functionality of the installer also is based on TWRP since it allows for a lot of automation that other recoveries lack.

@openandroidinstaller Lovely to be able to install a freedom-OS like /e/-OS or LineageOS in this way. One thing I want to add is functionality to install apps (especially system apps), and disable some pre-installed apps, after installing the OS. Especially to install things like f-droid, f-droid privileged extension, Titanium Backup, DAVx5, syncthing, nextcloud, bitwarden, authenticator, tailscale, etc. as system apps, and to replace some default app choices.

openandroidinstaller,
@openandroidinstaller@fosstodon.org avatar

@julian Thanks for your kind words :) Did it work well for you so far?

You can actually install addons later in the process. They need to be packaged in a way that they can be sideloaded, but for example f-droid, microg or google apps are available for this.

But this process could be extended and improved for sure :) give it a try

openandroidinstaller,
@openandroidinstaller@fosstodon.org avatar

@julian Would be great to have you on board :)

@openandroidinstaller My first little contribution to OpenAndroidInstaller: Show error details when selecting wrong image or recovery, a.k.a. #354 on your github repo.

When selecting an image or recovery that does not match the device codes, I was bothered by the lack of transparency and specificity in the error message, which just said the files β€œdon’t work with the device”.

We now show an error message that gives the user a better clue about why we rejected the file they chose. It explicitly shows the discovered and expected device codes.

If you like, you can review the diff of my branch and merge it to your dev branch like this (why not a github PR?):

git pull <a href="https://lab.trax.im/fork/github/openandroidinstaller-dev/openandroidinstaller.git" rel="ugc">https://lab.trax.im/fork/github/openandroidinstaller-dev/openandroidinstaller.git</a> 1-show-error-details-when-selecting-wrong-image-or-recovery

@julian Thanks a lot! :) I will look into it and then merge it
