No, we don't want to make decentralization mainstream. We want to make the mainstream decentralized. We need to show people the benefits of that as we're onboarding. Not herd them into a digital stadium with a mattress each.
Found it really interesting explaining what #mastodon is and how it works to my social media team @parismarx - they are much younger than I am and the idea of a social media that doesn't give you analytic, let you pay to boost or post ads just is so far from the realities they were raised with.
Having been in comms most my life I can remember the first years of #myspace#twitter and #FaceBook and how those platforms were very far from what they are today.
I did it! I'm finally leaving mastodon.social for a Mastodon+Hometown instance of my own creation! You can now find my new account @kostyn !!!!
Thanks very much to @mart0 for your incredible step-by-step guide to hosting Mastodon for a begininer like me, and of course, to @darius for their incredible writings and work on Hometown.
P.S. don't fall for Facebook's ("Meta's") bullshit.
A new testnet is amongst us. Jump on board if you haven’t already! Upload some files, and see how payment is automatically subtracted from your wallet.
All Monopoly money for now, of course, but it’s great to see it in action. Let us know of any errors you might see in the thread.
Payment for data is a big step forward, enabled by the fact that the network is now pretty well-behaved and stable (touch wood).
Another testnet is under way and we’re keeping an eye to see if our recent changes are improving stability. Do join in if you have time.
We’re hoping to see more node stability, but we’re still seeing some memory issues. Looking at dead nodes’ logs we tend to see a flurry of messaging just before they keel over, which is something we’re investigating now.
Do you like the idea of a free, decentralized social media? Then make the move today. Simply use the built in migration feature and move from mastodon.social to one of the smaller servers.
You can choose a server that has a theme that fits your posting habits, a server local to where you live or a generalist server in your language.
We continue to refine features ready for the next testnet, notably introducing pay-per-chunk and UTXO.
Paying per chunk means treating each chunk individually rather than the client bundling them into a merkle-tree and asking nodes for a quote on that file.
Fügt dem F-Droid-Store über die Optionen die Paktquelle "https://fdroid.pixelfed.net/" hinzu, dann steht die App zur Verfügung bzw. taucht in der Liste installierter Apps auf.
Welcome to our first attempt to have a couple of testnets running in parallel!
Here we have an alpha network, where we want to verify changes before we do a full release that would be compatible with the existing network.
This is not expected to be a wildly long testnet. But participation here will help iron out any potential issues as/when we release new code compatible with BasicEconomyTweaks.
Major progress on my first Autonomi demo app today. I'm sooo happy 😄
This proves that all the tricky but essential parts work together, so now I can add features and improve the operation knowing that effort won't be wasted.
It also already shows that we can build cross platform apps (desktop and mobile) with a web front end that use the #Autonomi#Rust APIs using #Tauri and your web framework of choice. Which for me is #Svelte
I regularly think about this essay about the evolution of #centralization in computing. It focuses on businesses and research, but I have a feeling that the next stage of #decentralization will happen via the general public.
We don't have to rely on energy-hungry, leak-prone servers to run 24/7 to do our basic tasks. We need more local-first computing.
For this #ThankYouTuesday, I want to thank everyone who still wants to own their data. Those who aren't swayed by seemingly valid and effective technical solutions designed solely to entrap. To those who don't believe in the flashy pages created by web giants that promise better results than others and sometimes sabotage competitors to create this illusion. Or embrace and extinguish the competition.
When all our data and activities are chained to the servers and infrastructures of a few entities, what will we truly own?
We have two new team members First, we are massively pleased that @Shu has agreed to join us to help out with monitoring, observability and visualisation of operations.
Second, we’re delighted to welcome Nic, who joins as product manager. This is an essential role as we move out of the R&D phase into delivery.
