When we value people so much that we “rif” them even with cash in the bank, maybe we don’t value them as much as we say we do. On a two-faced industry that needs firing standards as much as it needs hiring standards.
The @EU_Commission has launched a public #policy consultation on the rules defining the European #standards system (aka regulation 1025). The top-line for me is it completely ignores #OpenSource while making both engagement in standardisation and use of standards very hard for open source community members.
Unsurprisingly, the consultation's survey makes it extremely hard to tell them this! I think @osi will be attaching a letter to its input! The deadline is July 25.

It happened! Vim is now among the apps that have adopted the $XDG_CONFIG_HOME standard for storing user-specific configuration files. However, there are still many apps that use the older ~/.app convention or other specific locations for storing configuration files. Why is this the case?
I'm getting ready for the kickoff of an #NSF POSE grant workshop. So many good papers to reference, so little time. I'd better start a Zotero library now... #OpenSource#Standards#Metadata
Looks like the big #OpenSource foundations have got tired of being blocked by the #standards massif amd the @EU_Commission over #CRA standards and are organising their own initiative.
Hot on the heels of a post I wrote 4 years ago, wouldn't it be useful to have a well-known URl for user avatar images? When I sign up to a web service, I don't want to faff around uploading an image to use as my avatar. I want that service to look at my […]
With excellent timing given the upcoming request for #standards for #CRA compliance and the forthcoming review of regulation 1025 and standards #policy, CJEU has ruled that "harmonised standards form part of EU law" and cannot be kept secret as there is always a public interest in their disclosure. Time for some modernisation.
In case of a victory for the #PublicDomain, how to celebrate?
I just realised that night I'll be in a crowded theatre, so maybe I can cry: "EN 2:1992/A1:2004 Classification of fires"? (Or just distribute a few copies.)
