If you imagine #decentralization & the #Fediverse "winning" —

What does that scenario realistically look like for Big social-media?

They are unlikely to all disappear.
So that cannot be your answer.

So then what?

kkarhan,

@reiver they'll shrivel down and die a slow & deservedly painful death like #CompuServe, #Lycos, #AIM, #ICQ, #MySpace, #GooglePlus, #tumblr (and everything else #Yahoo touched) did before...

@reiver@mastodon.social avatar

@kkarhan

I am skeptical that will happen to all of them.

...

Lycos is gone, but yet Google is here.

AIM & ICQ are gone, but yet WhatsApp & Telegram are here.

Compuserve is gone, but the Telcos & Cable Companies have become the new ISPs.

Etc.

Only IF each instance holds firm against the big boys. There are still forum boards around, but they don't dominate our interactions like they used to once fb opened up to everyone. No platform lasts forever. The fediverse is at a critical point I think. If they sell out, game over.

kkarhan,

@Puck EXACTLY!

I specificically chose the :fediverse: with :activitypub: because I don't want to deal with the #GAFAMs - espechally #NSAbook and espechally not since :birdsite: :twitter: went to shit.

@stux of all the people should've known that.

I don't want to work for, with or support any of those GAFAMs and espechally not "#Meta" or whatever bs. name #Favebook gives itself.

(Anyone who dares to say a# corporation can be a "#victim" of #deadnaming will get instantly blocked -period!)

kkarhan,

@Puck I think it feels like a betrayal and I sincerely hope @stux and others will rethink their option.

If not, then he might just also sell :stuxhost: to #Azure, #AWS or #GCP and retire with the €€€€€€ made from that and not claim in announcement that ue cares aboit #privacy.

Because #NSAbook knowingly and willingly rats out users to regimes that KOS them for "living while trans"...

@reiver Most likely, a one-way federation...

@reiver@mastodon.social avatar

@vintprox

How does one-way federation work (from a technical point of view).

I wasn't aware that that was possible.

@reiver It's more like an instance gathering info from other instances, but not giving back anything useful - or opposite - propagating local posts, but not showing others in their feed.

I don't have live examples other than Pixelfed not concerning itself with pure text posts. However, it's not unimaginable with custom Mastodon/etc. to have only certain content appear and, in return, fill the Fediverse with waste material.
