I have two options now ...

  1. Order Ryzen 7 5700G

  2. keep money, and build pc with new GPU (powercolor red devil)

If i get more familiar in time with FreeBSD and bhyve etc then new PC will make sense.

Now for future i need to look for server parts/ready solutions.

Actually, i have no idea which hardware to buy for selfhosting stuff.

Every video on youtube is like "Hey! build a low power server!" ... half video later "there's a catch! You cannot buy this CPU" 😂 Waste of time.

I need something that can draw very little at IDLE (c-states etc.).

Server purpose? i think local backup storage is good to start. Not sure if i'm able to build something in safe manner and expose to web.

I've now collected 4 of the 5 stones needed to complete the protocol infinity gauntlet after deploying an device () for the first time last night.

Once completed, I'll be able to decrease my home's electricity usage by 50% at the snap of my fingers.

The only question - what's the fifth stone???

  1. MQTT
  2. Zigbee
  3. Z-Wave
  4. ESPHome
  5. ???

I recently thought about the different ways you can "have" a place in the Internet:

  • Bare metal
  • Dedicated server
  • Virtual Private Server (VPS)
  • Shared Hosting
  • Serverless
  • fly.io
  • Netlify, Vercel, etc

I just set up my first reverse proxy. Don't get too crazy — it was in the Caddy web server, where everything is easy.

I now have Caddy on my Raspberry Pi 4 Model B sending the traffic for one domain to a Raspberry Pi Zero W (also running Caddy).

Caddy makes this stuff easy.

I figured it out with this post:

https://caddy.community/t/running-a-caddy-server-behind-another-solved/13122/4

And the server (which is just showing the Caddy default page) is:

Today I have 14 services running on my own domain, with admin panel, backups, monitoring, email, SSO (so good to have the same user across all the services!)

I still need to do some tweaks to the services, but for a single user all running well.

As I am using 2 VPS the total cost is € 9,50/month + a donation of 5€ to :yunohost: project.

I could run everything on my own home, maybe I will do that in the future.

Big thanks go to @jan for making it possible to install a new dependency (python-isal) and to @stefano for hosting brew.bsd.cafe where the homeassistant rc script is now located.

Any comments, suggestions, or corrections - please let me know.

mandatory public setup done this morning.

echo "test2" | nc paste.200013.net 3333

should work for the whole internet if I did not messed my firewall rules 🤪 .

Eigene Kinder + eigener Kleingarten + eigene Technik > 100% Auslastung.

I am really getting the hang of stuff. Adding a new domain and website? Copy/paste dns settings. Add a simple server stub to my nginx.conf, run certbot --nginx -d domain.name and done. After it is running, add an index.html or setup a container and do some forwarding. Nice!

Helping someone with recovering data from their corrupt external hard drive which is requiring me to use my server’s storage drive to do the backup. Unfortuantely, I need to do this from a different computer than the server, so all my self-hosted services are currently down while I do a multi-terabyte data transfer dance. :(

I hooked my GNU/Linux-loving son up with an old #lenovo #thinkcenter mini-PC that I picked up at a used AV store for about $50. For another $20, I upgraded the ram to 12GB.

He's got it setup it up with #debian as his first home server, with which he's now hosting a few static websites and an internet radio station for his friends and family. He's got loads of resources to spare for when he gets into running larger services.

You don't need to spend $30+ a month on cloud services when an old recycled office PC will more than suffice.

The best part? Helping him troubleshoot his problems with #DNS and #nginx and all that fun stuff. I've already made every mistake possible over the decades, and he gets to benefit from that. That how it should work!
