Self-hosting my instance, daily log: While doing some database maintenance I accidentally set a past expiration date for all my posts. Luckily three were backups but it was touch and go for a moment there. Note to self: make a script or something to avoid typos in the future.
I'm Badri, a #writer and #nonfiction#editor at Snipette looking to explore and highlight the interesting aspects of our world 🔦
I also #read a lot, and am always on the lookout for interesting bits of #science, #culture, #history, or #philosophy which come out at some point or other in my articles 👀
I'm also @badrihippo, but this instance, Snipetteville, is a place for all Snipette editors to hang out. We may be talking in private, but if you see a public conversation you're most welcome to join. Feel free to tag me in deep and/or lighthearted #philosophical conversations about aspects of the world 💭
Oh and! I guess I'm (collectively) #selfhosting an instance!
For those who've seen me elsewhere in the Fedi: I'll still be there too, but will try to be more active here on Snipetteville, at least for a bit, so I can get the instance going 🚀
With todo lists and that grid/column layout for displaying multiple notes. Needs Android and iOS clients. Preferably w. #selfhosting / #selfhosted server.
Already using Joplin - but need a simple post-it looking solution. Think shopping lists and reminders not full featured notes and zettelkasten.
Yesterday I moved my personal #email to #tutanota (after #selfhosting it for a few months). Such a smooth experience. Everything just works ™️. Not that I had any problems with my VPS and #mailinabox. Just decided I want more peace of mind. Plus it's way cheaper. 12 EUR per year? C'mon, I couldn't ask for a better offer 🤩
Small update on my custom #NAS project; Last week I officially factory reset the #Synology and have put it up for sale. Such a good feeling to finally be getting rid of that thing.
Last week I also got the #FractalDesign#PC case I had been waiting on a restock for, and I have transplanted the NAS over. Some final (SATA power) cables are expected to come in today so I can install the drives I used to have in the Synology. We're getting there!
Friends. It seems that in my new place, the ISP has all incoming ports blocked. This blows for several reasons, but they centralize on the fact that I self-host several services.
So what are my options? What are the most user-friendly and privacy-respecting ways to punch a hole and keep sharing my stuff with the WAN?
Big Tech is trying to monopolize all communication and collaboration tools on the planet. This would be terrible for our future. The Open Source community needs to prevent this.
As I reach my six month mark of being on the #fediverse, I can say that I have become quite happy not only #selfhosting everything myself but actually having social interactions with people here.
Yes, my "views" are not as high as it would have been other places but the responses I get are much more frequent.
I want to also personally thank @jerry over at #infosec#exchange for nurturing my love for FOSS and self hosting. His taking time out of his schedule to help me solve my first issue with #mastodon kept me here and I'm here to stay.
Were it not for the reliance on Google's #Cloud services and Google refusing to make them #GDPR & #BDSG - compliant which they only could if they were to enable [#SelfHosting due to #CloudAct] these would've flooded the markets outside the USA...
I'm hosting my own Git instance for a while now (Gitea) and I'm still not sure if I want to have it as my default/main instance or stick with GitHub as my main.
What would you do?
I'm also very curious what self-hosted instances you guys use.
#BlueSky is a step backwards for #Decentralisation. It'll be another walled garden with power concentrated at the admin level instead of the user being in control.
Just as with #Mastodon, the focus will be on scalability of a few really big instances, instead of creating an environment that fosters a network of many small instances.
There's a reason that I have a single user instance since many years. I strongly believe that a better balance of power is possible and achievable for #ActivityPub
@jwildeboer I believe that while single-user instances are good for technically inclined users who want to enjoy all the freedoms and burdens that come with self-hosting, but I also think that large instances with a stable financial backing (hopefully directly from their users) are also good for non-technical users who want stability.
Small instances where one guy maintains a server for 20 people will leave the users hanging when the admin decides they've had enough.
Just after I told somebody how I use the two 2TB HDD of my server individually (instead of RAID) to get 4TB of storage, one of them was remounted readonly.
Looks like #Nextcloud Social might be getting a big update soon. Nextcloud Social was my intro to the #fediverse many years ago before the Social project went stale. It's not #Mastodon on the software side, but an #ActivityPub implementation that is trying to achieve a similar goal. That means you should theoretically be able to interact with #Mastodon soon using your current #Nextcloud instance as a server.
@vwbusguy
Thanks for that. All excellent developments. (I've been #selfhosting a #Nextcloud instance since 2018. It's allowed me to entirely #degoogle my life.)
