Chinese authorities are clamping down on free speech by exploiting an AirDrop weakness Apple has known about for 5 years (at least).

@reboot46 @pixelcode Doesn't Protonmail suffer from the same lack of #interoperability as other #encryptedmail providers?

We can't exchange encrypted mail with people outside Proton - it just sends a link whose password you then need to share through a secure platform like #Matrix, #Briar, #Session, #SimpleX or #Signal. Then why not just send the message on that secure platform in the first place?

Encryption for some is a lost cause.

Encryption for all or it's just another walled garden.

Wouldn't it be possible to restore communications in #Gaza using a mesh network (Bluetooth, WiFi...)? Gaza is very dense, it should technically work, and with devices on the other side of the borders (Israel, Egypt) connected to the internet, it should even be possible to get data out and in from the internet to this local network. Does anyone know if such an app exists? If it doesn't already exist, who would be willing to put together a team to code it?

#Briar if you want just a messaging application (by wifi and or bluetooth) usable by anyone
#GNUNet if you want a complete network layer but hard to set up

Molly v.s. Signal

I am not comfortable that signal depends proprietary google library. However, I find that Molly lags significantly behind signal (around 1 to 2 weeks, so maybe not as significant as I thought), but I am just concerned that if there is a security fix in signal, molly will not be able to react as fast....

    I've seen you mention before how Signal and Telegram are better than some of the more commonly used messengers.

    What are your thoughts on Briar and SimpleX Chat? From what I've been able to find on them, they seem good, but you seem like the person to ask about them.

    ilyess,
    @ilyess@mastodon.online avatar

    @Hawkwinter My personal recommendation is:

    • , if you know the recipient personally (friends and family);

    • , if you need to establish a temporary connection with someone without having to disclose your phone number;

    • , for public group chats and channels;

    , if all hell breaks loose and there’s a pressing need to coordinate with no internet access.

    ilyess,
    @ilyess@mastodon.online avatar

    @Hawkwinter the relay app, called #Briar Mailbox, seems to be an Android app so I’m assuming it’s meant to run on a smartphone: https://briarproject.org/news/2023-briar-mailbox-released/

    Yeah, I think what you’re suggesting would work theoretically. I’m not sure why they haven’t adopted that approach though.

    Por cierto, quien quiera #alternativas a #Telegram centradas en privacidad y seguridad debería usar #SimpleX / #SimplexChat o, en casos muy extremos y de manera temporal, #Briar.

    Si se quiere tener mejor control sobre la mensajería instantánea es mejor que no dependa de un número de teléfono ni dirección de correo electrónico.
