#TIL that #Briar now has desktop apps in beta testing:

https://briarproject.org/news/2023-briar-desktop-0.5.0-released/

Last I heard it was only available on Android.

Not only that, but the Briar mailbox app is available as well, got it working on an old phone, works flawlessly.

I saw that mentioned. I'm a little confused about the relationship between Briar and the Mailbox app. Can you elaborate?

Sure, the mailbox is meant to be low powered, always on, receiving messages for you even when your primary device is offline. Unlike Signal or Session where messages are cached in a swarm until the receiver comes online, Briar is p2p so if one party is offline, the message can't be transferred. The mailbox version of Briar is envisioned to run on an old phone that is always online and plugged in, so your messages can be recieved, and you can pull them to your device next time it goes online. When the concept was originally pitched, the idea was that the mailbox would cache the messages of anyone in your contacts (even if the message wasn't directed to you) so that you'd essentially be providing the mailbox to your community, but I haven't seen it indicated if that part is working yet. Maybe in a future iteration.

I didn't know that, that's clever. Are you sure Signal works this way? I always thought it was just standard client/server.

I’m actually not sure, more familiar with Session, and I know they forked from Signal, so I guessed it would be similar, but yeah, they could just be running servers.

True, but I think the main thing they changed was swapping out the centralised server back-end for a BlockChain thingy.
