Thanks, sudden craving. I'm in bed. And I have no idea where to get Kimbap in . And I never had it before.

Finally figured out how to do audio normalization/compression in videos via the command line, and it's fantastic

Use to normalize (amplify/compress) audio in a video:

ffmpeg -i video.mp4 -filter:a "speechnorm=e=12.5:r=0.0001:l=1" video-normalized.mp4

No, the USA has not ever had marriage equality.

Even when marriage was opened up to the gay community the disabled community was not allowed to marry without losing their access to healthcare. Which is not a concern of Pride Month or a reflection on the LGBTQ+ community, but is still an issue.

I have a question. I’m running . I log into my machine from the console and use startx to start X11. By default, my terminal app (urxvt) does not start a login shell. I know I can configure it to do this. The question is: should I? And why?

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@tedchoward

I always do, because without a login shell, a lot of my rc scripts aren't getting run. I guess you'd want a non-login shell for something where you just want to pop open a quick shell, run one command, and close it, or maybe just show the output of a command without interactivity.

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@tedchoward

This is the only reason I can think of:

~ $ time bash -c true

real 0m0.002s
user 0m0.000s
sys 0m0.002s

~ $ time bash -lc true
79%, pending-charge (Running bash on KDE-Wayland)

real 0m0.273s
user 0m0.170s
sys 0m0.146s

Non-login shells are much faster, especially for me, when you consider:

~ $ wc -l .bashrc* .bash_[af]*
115 .bashrc
322 .bashrc2
265 .bash_aliases
1136 .bash_functions
1838 total

...

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@tedchoward

...

Ok, dang, I need to weed out my functions, lol

I actually have a function for parsing my .bash_functions file to show me what the biggest (line count) functions are! XD

Anyone got shell accounts to an OpenBSD server I can get an invite to? (Not privileged or anything/teensy quota is fine)

Just wanted to have a shell account I can learn on. I do have an OpenBSD machine at home, but my PineBook is realistically Linux-only. OpenBSD will run, but the framebuffer doesn't work (yet?), so I think it's just "hope xenodm works, otherwise debug with a serial cable" ;)

P.S. I think I was looking in the wrong place. There is a list here: https://tildeverse.org/members/

Oh man, that would be amazing. Honestly, 1 core, 1GB RAM is plenty.
But I think I know where to look for shell accounts now if you want to use that hard-earned VPS for something else. 😻

Hey peeps,

What older laptops work best with NetBSD?

I tried Net on my Thinkpad X200 about 18 months ago, and wasn't able to get S3 suspend working (it just rebooted, IIRC).

Is anyone else running NetBSD on a laptop?

Just curious, thinking about trying it out in the future, on something cheap and used. :)

I was at someone's house today and there was no way to set the thermostat because the internet connectivity was down.

This is the kind of crap that radicalizes you.

The thermostat was put there by the builder.

Addendum for further explanation: I was there for something work-related, and the house is vacant for the moment. You're supposed to connect the thermostat to their app, but I couldn't get the app to see the dumb thing, even after joining its own hotspot.
Really unnecessarily confusing.

Yeah, I deleted my fitbit account and data a few years back. It's awful how much the corpos are trying to make us their slaves.

If you are looking for an alternative and have an Android phone (even as a secondary), look into Gadgetbridge:

RL_Dane,

It lets you sync to many types of smartwatches directly, without giving any data to the data pimps. At most, you have to do an initial sync with the corporate app, and then gadgetbridge takes over from there.

No fitbits unfortunately, but many huami and xiaomi devices, which can be had for pretty cheap. Also a couple fully open source ones like the

People don't know any better. They assume it HAS to be this way.

There's no way that syncing fitness data to some corporation (read: data pimp) has to be a requirement of operating a fitness tracker.

People have been so stupefied by Apple, et. al., that they just don't know any better.
