I just did the thing YOU NEVER, EVER DO.

I repeated a dd command (under doas to root) WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE DEVICE NAME.

FORTUNATELY, the only collateral damage was an unneeded 4GB file under /dev/.

PHEW!!!

P.S... do files created in /dev somehow make it to /, even though it's its own mountpoint? How does that work?

So, did my monthly upgrade of -current. Two things that caught my attention:

is now provided out the box (awesome)
is now enabled out of the box and is configurable (Even more awesome)

@charadon

Solid!

@charadon

Oh really? What's going on with KDE6?

doesn't have it yet, either. Not even Sid. ;)

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@charadon

Huh!

Ironically, I've come to the conclusion that wayland is fine for sway, but sucks for KDE or anything not built atop wlroots, because almost none of the utilities like wtype work at all except on wlroots-based compositors.

So, I'm still happy on Sway, but KDE is back to x11 indefinitely for me.

Hey peeps,

I'm trying to figure out what GELI stands for. (Just because it's such a cute name, I guess? lol)

I've deduced that it's GEOM_ELI (https://man.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=geli&apropos=0&sektion=0&manpath=FreeBSD+14.1-RELEASE+and+Ports&arch=default&format=html), but what's ELI?

(Also, I kinda wish had man -K (full text search). I need to write a todo to make my own implementation)

I'd hate to bother someone putting in real time to keep BSD awesome, but I'll keep that in my back pocket if I don't find an answer elsewhere. :D

OH MY, I think I've stumbled onto something very secret and dangerous now!! lol

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@wednesday @thumb

GUYS, I just found an even CRAZIER conspiracy (sending that email to Mr. Dawidek now, though):

DO THIS on any x86_64 box:

grep -l AWAVAUATSH /bin/* /usr/bin/*

WHAT?!@?!?!?!?!@o#(!*$&!(@!(!!!!!

Listen, you little... 😂

@sbank

Seems pretty plausible! Is it documented anywhere?

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@misterjoshua

My understanding is that it's just a valid "string" of x86_64 opcodes that might be commonly found in various parts of code. Not sure what it does. They might have described that, but I was probably skimming too fast ;)

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@misterjoshua

Next time you're compiling one of your own projects, try doing a

strings * |grep -E "[ASAVWTSPI]{4}"

-or-

grep -El "[ASAVWTSPI]{4}" *

in the directory with the compiled output ;)

New(-to-me) laptop is in!

Looking forward to putting it through its paces.

This <$100 thing might be the most performant machine I own. 😆

Also, I've been experimenting a bit with lately. It's not quite as polished as a Linux distro, but it's mighty nice! (Persistent -based boot USB image, can do UFS or ZFS and optionally encrypt)

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@mitch

Man, daily driving tails sounds like a lot of work, lol.

Did you end up putting a script somewhere on the web that you could run to import all your docs/scripts/settings after every boot?

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

Ooo, just remembered that I need to pick a name for the new laptop.

Any suggestions? I usually pick the name of and ships, example:

X200 - (Millennium) Falcon
- rogueone
LG Gram 17 2022 - Excelsior

I picked falcon because it was old and a little beat up, but also very functional. rogueone because it was a bit of a rebellious device (a $200 ARM linux laptop!), and Excelsior was especially poignant because of an elegant, but unstable machine.

Forgot one:
(nebulon-b) frigate - a big HONKING CHONK 2012 Inspiron

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@joel

Not familiar with it, unfortunately

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

I mean, I literally have not consumed a single piece of Halo content in my life, other than watching friends play on an Xbox 360 over a decade ago.

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@JensHannemann

That's funny, Chewie was my alter ago when I first started getting back into Linux 5 years go (and the Falcon was my ship, er, daily-driver laptop).

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@toby1kenobi

Ha, that would be great. No, it's "just" a Thinkpad X260. Pretty sweet little machine for $65 shipped!

I think I'm going for "Intrepid," as in the (second, TNG/Voyager-era) U.S.S. Intrepid.
