I have SMS messaging off in my phone with iMessage and it is forcing through SMSs (not encrypted) and it makes no sense. #Apple

@LALegault That’s very weird. If the recipients also have iMessage then that should just work unless you’re having a data issue (or they are). The only people I use SMS with aren’t on iPhones (and then there’s the couple of people who insist on Messenger and one friend who uses Signal—I’ve never managed to get anyone to use that for any length of time, especially people who are addicted to WhatsApp).

@cjgyt as soon as What’s App was bought by Meta I deleted it. My European friends all use it but their data laws are so much better

@LALegault Yeah. I’ve only ever used WhatsApp for a brief time, and it was while I was visiting relatives in Europe. Deleted it immediately afterwards. And yes, European privacy laws tend to be better—but if the anti-encryption push gains traction (especially in the UK), or the bizarro idea of making services interoperable, then it’s all going to become a disaster.

@cjgyt @LALegault I used What's App just one day because there was an event I was involved with where a group was using it. Once the event was over I ditched it.

@cjgyt @LALegault Aside from Signal, there are a number of other free/libre/opensource apps for texting & chat like #Tox, #Wire and #Briar All of them have a much smaller user base.

@LALegault I use Signal for encrypted SMS. However, if the other user is not a Signal user, then I have to use an unencrypted SMS app.

Signal no longer supports unencrypted messages period. However, gradually more folks I'm in touch with do use Signal.

So, it's a process of gently encouraging your friends/contacts to move to Signal.

@leftylabourtech

Good idea, thank you.

@LALegault You can create Signal groups and stuff like that...voice/video calling...all end to end encrypted

I worked on a riding election campaign last year and even though folks have scattered, we keep in touch via Signal.

@leftylabourtech I’m on signal but most of my contacts are not and look at me like I am spy when I suggest it, but I will try again, lol

@LALegault It was like that for me some years ago as well, but it's changed now. Not saying I've moved everyone over yet, but a significant number.

Signal also has a desktop app and given that I'm older and hate touch screens when I'm home I just use the desktop app.
