Ideally? Relax in a little self-sufficient lime plastered rammed-earth (or cob) cottage, with masonry-wood-heat, eating food grown in our own garden, half an hour outside a little town.

And what to do there? Write a ttrpg, and make solo indie videogames.

I think it's important to clarify that, while Substack "can and does ban sex worker stuff," that is not the same issue as banning Nazis.

It seems like it should be, but the difference there is that, because they collect money and pay out money to publishers, they're beholden to the terms of the companies they use for processing credit cards and bank transfers, who all want to stay as far from sex work as possible for legal liability reasons.

If Substack could get away with allowing sex work, they absolutely would. It's not them making a value judgement between sex workers and Nazis, it's that their entire goal is to make money. And without being able to handle money, they wouldn't have a product.

Hawkwinter,

@nyquildotorg
Thats a good point. If you want to stop people from banning sex workers, you need to make discrimination against sex workers illegal, and start with the payment processors.

realn2s, (edited ) to microsoft

I'm not sure if I get something wrong, but I think ID Protection is complete rubbish. E.g. when ban weak passwords with the ominous 5 points rule the results seem to be completely arbitrary.

Microsoft speaks of including commonly used weak or compromised passwords in their Global banned password list. But the list isn't based on any external data source, so leaked passwords not leaked by Microsoft are not included ๐Ÿคกโ€‹.

This leads to:
Known leaked passwords are accepted. Location name plus year is accepted. Dictionary word plus year is accepted!!!

Not sure if this applies only to German dictionary words.

It gets even worse. Reading the documentation, I found "Characters not allowed: Unicode characters" WTF

Coming back to the weird point system. A banned password is not really banned, it gives you "only" 1 point (and you need five).

This leads to the question how many points do none-banned words give?

If you think it can't get worse, you're wrong! It looks like each character of a none-banned word gives one point. Meaning "password1234" is an accepted password. (1 point for password and 4 for each digit)

Or a real life example: The attach which affected Microsoft, US government agency and countless other organizations world wide, was cause by a weak FTP server password.
Namely "solarwinds123", which would be accepted by ID Protection (1 point each for "solar" and "wind", 3 points for the numbers. If "solarwinds" would be on the custom banned list, "solarwind1234" would have been enough.

And you can't do anything against it.

I actually hope that the documentation is somewhat wrong and that "123" is not 3 points but 1 as it are consecutive numbers. But this would make it only marginal better (2023

Hawkwinter,

@realn2s Brilliant.

I feel like the easiest "fix", would be to up the minimum password lengths to 20+ characters, and start encouraging people to use multiple random dictionary words to male gibberish phrases, along with a special character and number and upper case. And of course, encourage UTF8 characters not just ascii.

Maybe use a secure open source encrypted password manager you keep the data files on your own devices (and use a better password for that).

I'm not an expert in infosec, just a regular software dev - but from what I do understand, that would be much better than the crap we have now.

That would seem more sensible, if we're revising standards. Swap a 'password' for longer pass phrases.

Hawkwinter,

@realn2s
I do it a few times a week. It's... Well, on mobile I often use the clipboard feature in my password manager to get them where I need them. The typing happens more when I need to type them into something else. But its not so bad even on mobile so long as your special characters get put between words and theyre ones easily accessible on your mobile keyboard.

Something like 7792eartH%wasH%ladY is pretty easy to type on a phone keyboard, not that hard to remember, and hard to brute force or get from a dictionary of common passwords. Grab words from more than one dictionary in different languages and it would be even better. Instead of a predictable length it could also just be 4-6 random words of any length (minimum 20 chars, but maybe more than 30).

Hawkwinter,

@realn2s

The password on my password manager DB is much longer, and also randomly generated. That one I just practiced until I memorized it. Lol

(But its easier to memorize the random list of words, numbers, and the 'rules' of the special characters and casing you used, than to memorize that many purely random characters. Lol)

Yโ€™all gonna hate me for this, but Iโ€™m looking forward to Threads federating.

I donโ€™t enjoy Facebook and find Instagram just OK, but those are the platforms of mom and pop businesses. That is how so many tiny fashion boutiques run by one woman reach out to find customers. Itโ€™s helping to get the husband and wife team opening a cafe on their savings their first 100 customers and often the next 100 too.

If youโ€™re going to support indie retail shops, you have to work with Facebook and Instagram. If we can pull them into the Fediverse, it opens up opportunities to involve truly small businesses in the Fediverse instead of always being a wall too high for tech challenged merchants to scale.

The definition on wikipedia seems to be different than OSI in that I didnt see a mention of "no restrictions on usecase or field". I suspect more people will operate off of the definition on wikipedia or a dictionary than from the OSI.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source

Hawkwinter,

@danialbehzadi @diazona @ramblingreaders @bookstodon

All I'm saying is that I have a Computer Science degree (graduated in 2012), and took a Software law class that did cover FOSS licenses and today is still the first time I've ever heard that the OSI defines Open Source with a clause that it can't have such restrictions on usage. I'm definitely more familiar with Stallman's "Free" software as a concept, and that was covered during my degree. I'm not saying the OSI definition is /bad/, but it seems to include at least one clause that is not widely known.

Hawkwinter,

@danialbehzadi @diazona @ramblingreaders @bookstodon

Specifically the "to anyone and for any purpose" portion. I don't think you're incorrect to operate off of that additional clause. I'm just saying that there are a bunch of people out there who did not hear of the term with that particular clause attached, and I learned something new today as someone who is not a complete layperson with regard to software licenses.

Hawkwinter, (edited )

@danialbehzadi @diazona @ramblingreaders @bookstodon

Thats about whether ignorance of a law gets you out of legal liability (it doesnt, of course), not 'what you can reasonably expect other people are aware of in a normal conversation'.

In this case, I'm someone who would have been much more likely to be aware of this piece of information than most, and yet I just learned something new myself because of this conversation. Thats the only point I am making.

Hawkwinter,

@danialbehzadi @diazona @ramblingreaders @bookstodon

All of that said, I wouldnt want to use this license for anything I made myself. It looks to have been drafted by someone without any legal experience, and I would be surprised if it actually functions as expected in a court of law.

Of course I can't find the exact article I'm looking for. But:

Here's one talking about it.

And another.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2022/04/23/long-covid-return-to-running/

The basic takeaway seems to be to take it easy for 1-2 weeks, and then ease back into it based on how youre feeling.

Covid is hard on your heart and lungs, and it can take a runner up to 79 days before they're back to normal. In the meanwhile, you may find yourself breathing differently/inefficiently, your resting heart rate will be higher and will go up faster when you exercise, and it will mess up your sleep and youll need more sleep than you used to. And trying to force yourself to perform at your pre-covid levels will apparently make things worse.

    Just thinking back to myself in my teens and 20s, I was certainly much more inclined to argue with people who viewed the world differently than myself. Now that I'm older, I find I lack the energy to deal with those interpersonal conflicts, and increasingly want to avoid them.

    I had, for a while, been considering hosting a local instance for an area that doesnt have one. But after seeing the fediblock and fediadmin stuff that took place over July and August, I've changed my mind. I simply do not have the capacity to handle the stress of administering a social media instance, even if other people were doing or helping with the moderating.

    A themed forum limited to a particular topic, or a themed discord with 'ontopic' limits, I could do, but not general purpose social media.

    I do think the younger people are somewhat more likely to flare up and get blocked, as well as to sometimes overreact, but I couldnt tell you how strong that correlation is.

    The general takeaway was they think white supremacists, and white people who dont hate white people for their european ancestry, are the same thing.
