Think the WGA strike isn't relevant to you? It's relevant to anyone doing creative or knowledge work because if it happens to writers, it could happen elsewhere. They asked this consortium under AMPTP including Amazon and Netflix that AI be prevented from training on covered material, and rewriting their work. The request was not only denied but they were offered a token yearly meeting to "discuss advances in technology".
Even some technologists I know don't fully understand how much training is required for AI, and that its generative capacity sits on literally millions of thoughts and ideas generated and ingested into systems. Protecting their IP from being ingested by a variety of neural networks owned by Netflix, Amazon, Paramount, NBC Universal etc., for generative AI use, is a baseline expectation for people who, like actors, may only make a single sale of their labor in a calendar year. #AI#wgastrike#wgawriters#writing#technologyhttps://deadline.com/2023/05/writers-guild-strike-begins-1235340176/
This week, we head over to Midgar to clean a fire bombed bar, a mechanical spider, a three-wheeled truck from the 50's and a familiar, but oddly named bike.
Amongst all the things we cleaned, we discussed what it would take to get people to move over to platforms like ActivityPub and to leave capitalism behind in general.
I love shooting candids, and it's these little slice of life photos that really help show off how much phone cameras have improved. Shot from the telephoto on the Xiaomi 13 Ultra, about an instant before the three ran off for the playground. I hope my daughter remembers what they were talking about when she gets older. 🥰 https://flic.kr/p/2oxj7ia
Now that Sakurajima Social, our sister instance is now up, here is an #introduction post.
My name is James known as chikorita157. I run an anime blog, Chikorita157’s Anime Blog since 2009 and I cover primarily yuri, school girl slice of life shows or shows with mostly/all female cast. Manga Time Kirara titles are my favorite, especially Machikado Mazoku, Gochuumon, Comic Girls, New Game, Bocchi the Rock.
Also, I am learning Japanese since 2012 and aiming for JLPT N2.
Some of my favorite artists are: Minase Inori, TrySail, Uchida Maaya, Touyama Nao, Kitou Akari, and Ueda Reina.
My main account is at @chikorita157, where I do most of my posting there, but I will post here sometimes as well.

Why Calckey and not just another Mastodon Instance?
Well, you may ask. We went wtih a more inclusive domain name this time and since Calckey resembles Twitter, it might give the push for some Anime Bloggers to leave Twitter and join us at the Fediverse as it has arguably a better UI, Mastodon API support (in the works), and the ability to migrate accounts and bringing your content with you. This is different compared to Mastodon since you can only move your followers.
The goal with both my Mastodon and Calckey instance is give Anime Bloggers and Japanese-media based creators along with fans of Japanese media an inclusive and non-toxic place place to talk about Japanese media and share your Japanese-related content. With Twitter's future uncertain and #BlueSky not being the answer, the Fediverse might be the solution to a decentralized social network future.
If you want to create an alt or migrate here and you are on an instance already, send a direct message to @chikorita157 and you can get an invite code sent to you quicker than through a form.
People without a Fediverse account can request an account through our form

I've been publishing to it for a while, but I feel like it's time to make it official. Which is scary and weird, and I have been here before under different circumstances.
But I also wanted to keep my writing skills sharp, and stay within an industry that I've worked in since (gulp) 1998.
Which is a long-winded way to say that I've got a new outlet for consumer tech coverage. And I happen to like the editor a whole lot. He's a very nice man*.
30 years ago, one decision altered the course of our connected world
On April 30, 1993, the World Wide Web was released into the public domain. It revolutionized the internet and allowed users to create websites filled with graphics, audio and hyperlinks.
"We didn't create the wood transistor with any specific application in mind. We did it because we could. This is basic research, showing that it's possible, and we hope it will inspire further research that can lead to applications in the future," says Isak Engquist.

I write about parenting, technology, and music and explore where those three topics intersect. From taking kids to concerts and festivals to the impact of tech on the music industry and all our lives. #introduction#music#technology#glasgow
This quote summarizes so well one of the main reasons why I've been building my own software stack(s) for the past ~20 years:
“If you don’t develop your own technology, you will need to adapt to the language and patterns of the technology someone else developed – maybe in contradiction to your cultural values”. — Gualter Barbas Babtista
My name is JC. I'm a former tech #journalist, having run the phones vertical for Tom's Guide for over two years. I'm still a writer, just not in a public-facing position.
Gotta love all the folks in my YT comments acting like making a wearable display is SO easy. Nothing is worth buying until it's like magic star trek tech, that is completely portable, wireless, has micro-batteries, lasts for a week on a charge, and is a fully rendered interactive AR experience.

Minimizing DNA Traces During Riotous Moments #Zine
"[Y]ou can be pretty certain that whenever arson is involved, a DNA forensics team will be involved too. [...] We want to briefly summarize some practical considerations. By arming ourselves with some preparation and an accurate understanding of how DNA is transferred, it is possible to drastically limit the amount of DNA we leave behind."
