#TechBros threaten us bc they’ve been given virtually unchecked power. Why did the CA Public Utilities Commission vote to expand driverless ride-hailing services in San Francisco? What were the commissioners promised?: Scores of residents asked commissioners to limit Cruise & Waymo’s expansion, describing the robotaxis as “death traps’ & a menace to disabled people & children. Injured person reportedly dies after Cruise cars block first responders. #AutonomousVehicleshttps://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/cruise-cars-reportedly-block-first-responders-18343475.php
If Andrew Tate & Jordan Peterson represent what modern Capitalism wants to prop up as a voice for Men™, Im happy / proud to be both unpropped up & an anticapitalist Feminist crank.
Oh, goodie. The latest version of #Mastodon has yet another feature the #TechBros want us to use, and if we refuse to use it, we’re “missing out” (on the increased risk of being #dogpiled).😑
"f you regularly follow debates about public policy, especially those involving wealthy tech bros, it’s obvious that there’s a strong correlation among the three Cs: climate denial, Covid vaccine denial and cryptocurrency cultism."
Crimes against humanity: #TechBros Musk & Zuck have decided they don’t need the news IDU -causing problems when nat. disasters strike. As wildfires ravage W CAN, Canadians can’t read: news about them on FB/IG. Meta blocked links to news orgs. in CAN to protest a law -require it to pay publishers for distrib. their content. As a storm flooded much of S CA -residents & govt agencies who turned to X for real-time updates struggled to discern fact from fiction🚨. #HumanRightshttps://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/08/24/canada-fires-ca-floods-meta-x-news/
How much of a threat to #democracy is #artificialintelligence - we may well find out (to our cost) next year if John Naughton's (well-founded) expectations come to pass.
But, hey the #TechBros want to have some #regulation... all a but like closing the stable door after your (AI-driven) horse has bolted, methinks
"We urge policymakers to draw on solid scholarship that investigates the harms and risks of AI—and the harms caused by delegating authority to automated systems, which include the unregulated accumulation of data and computing power, climate costs of model training and inference, damage to the welfare state and the disempowerment of the poor, as well as the intensification of policing..."
This presentation by @timnitGebru, "Eugenics and the Promise of Utopia through AGI", is a concentrated braindump that illustrates the path from centuries of racism and oppression to today's techbro mythology of a technological utopia.
It's also a reminder that people who talk-up "AGI" have ugly ideologies and don't know jack about AI.
He called himself Richard Hoste while writing filthy racist articles for white supremacist publications. His real name when he's not hiding behind a pseudonym is Richard Hanania, and Silicon Valley tech bro millionaires have funneled millions to him. He's joined at the hip with Peter Thiel, and HuffPo has unmasked him.
"As the boundaries of mainstream conservatism have become more dominated by extreme ideas, mainstream media institutions, in pursuit of 'balance,' have felt compelled to shift rightward as well. This drive to avoid appearing biased in favor of liberal viewpoints has inadvertently opened the door to more radical ideologies, normalizing them within mainstream culture."
Okay....
The guy whose company built the duct tape and chewing gum submersible that imploded over the Titanic wants to build a habitat on Venus, where the surface pressure is 75-100 times higher than on Earth, the temperature is hot enough to melt lead, and the atmosphere is basically sulfuric acid...
So like, is #BlueSky a real site? I keep hearing about it, but I've been on the wait list for months, The feed is private so I have no idea what's going on there, and I've never even seen a screen cap of that interface...
Is anything actually like happening there? Does anyone actually like go there? Is it even active?
From what I can tell, 90% of the people who are going to Twitter alternatives are coming here to Mastodon. BlueSky, being invite only, hasn't even been able to achieve any sort of momentum...
Does anyone else remember #GooglePlus? That thing Google made that was way better than #Facebook, but they never actually released it, so people set up accounts on invites that just ended up being mostly unused?
I feel like #JackDorsey, like most #TechBros, isn't paying attention to history, and doesn't get that you need to hit hard and fast with these, and get as many switches as possible while there's hype, like #Threads (the spyware app) at least seems to be attempting...
"How do tech bros plan to ride out Armageddon?" Arwa Mahdawi asks.
Her answer: "Living it up on their private islands."
She points to the case of Sam Bankman-Fried, founder of the bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX, and his younger brother, Gabriel, who wanted to buy a Pacific island to escape the coming Armageddon — to whose coming their me-first tech-bro libertarianism has lavishly contributed.
@weirdwriter Alt text is also, in my opinion, misused by SEO #techbros. This misuse often ends up as a major impediment for blind persons trying to use the web. In the next iteration of HTML, we need a tag or attribute of some sort for greater reachability through search engines that does not adversely impact the visually challenged.
The Fall of Stack Overflow: SO has lost around 50% of its traffic. This decline is similarly reflected in site usage, with approximately a 50% decrease in the number of Q&A, as well as the number of votes. The AI bots hit SO hard for sure, at least that is what I think. I still see SO as top answers in Google query but Bing is upto no good. LOL. https://observablehq.com/@ayhanfuat/the-fall-of-stack-overflow
