Here at the Dutch Thematic DCC #SocialSciences & #Humanities, we are running a transparent, communities-involving process: We invited everyone who is eligible to send in project idea, to be turned into proposals for the NWO (Dutch Research Council) TDCC 'Challenge' call. Next, we shared the ideas we receive through our website and all submitters present their idea in short online meetings.

Please share further and @tag anybody who this might be interesting for. 🙏

#AI #GenerativeAI #SocialSciences #Humanities: "With Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer releasing a sweeping “roadmap” for AI legislation today and major product announcements from OpenAI and Google, it’s been a big week for AI… and it’s only Wednesday.

But amid the ever-quickening pace of action, some observers wonder if government is looking at the tech industry with the right perspective. A report shared first with DFD from the nonprofit Data & Society argues that in order for powerful AI to integrate successfully with humanity, it must actually feature… the humanities.

Data & Society’s Serena Oduro and Tamara Kneese write that social scientists and other researchers should be directly involved in federally funded efforts to regulate and analyze AI. They say that given the unpredictable impact it might have on how people live, work and interact with institutions, AI development should involve non-STEM experts at every step.

“Especially with a general purpose technology, it is very hard to anticipate what exactly this technology will be used for,” said Kneese, a Data & Society senior researcher."

@dlakelan@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

Here's the logical structure of what you will be taught in terms of #statistics as a masters student in pretty much any #science field.

If MY DATA is a sample from two random number generators of PARTICULAR TYPE, and MY TEST has a small p value then MY FAVORITE EXPLANATION FOR THE DIFFERENCES IS TRUE.

This is, quite simply, a logical fallacy. The first thing wrong is that your data IS NOT a sample from a random number generator of that particular type. So we can ignore the rest logically.

dlakelan,
@dlakelan@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

So the very basic stuff you are taught in masters level or stats or whatever is built on two layers of logical fallacy.

So that's why poor stats practices are absolutely more common than good stats practices. That's why the kind of thing posted on the Reddit post I mentioned in my recent posts is actually everywhere in science. Students are literally taught to do things wrong in the textbooks.

Research proposal written entirely in receives federal funding

A Faculty of research funding proposal written entirely in nêhiyawewin, the Cree language, has been approved for funding by the and Research Council (SSHRC) to demonstrate their commitment to supporting languages in government-funded opportunities. This is the first proposal submitted exclusively in an Indigenous language to be funded by a federal funding agency.

Religion and the Social Sciences

Conversations with Robert Bellah and Christian Smith

More often than not it's a class in the social sciences that challenges the faith of students, not a class in biology. Does critical understanding of our religious traditions, institutions, and convictions undercut them? Or can a modern social scientific approach deepen faith's commitments, making us full participants in today's intellectual culture?

#AI #AIRegulation #BigTech #GenerativeAI #SocialSciences: "The public’s deep mistrust of key regulatory and industry players is not entirely unwarranted. Industry leaders have had a hard time disentangling their commercial interests from efforts to develop an effective regulatory system for AI. This has led to a fundamentally messy policy environment.

Tech firms helping regulators think through the potential and complexities of technologies like AI is not always troublesome, especially if they are transparent about potential conflicts of interest. However, tech leaders’ input on technical questions about what AI can or might be used for is only a small piece of the regulatory puzzle.

Much more urgently, societies need to figure out what types of applications AI should be used for, and how. Answers to those questions can only emerge from public debates that engage a broad set of stakeholders about values, ethics and fairness. Meanwhile, the public is growing concerned about the use of AI."

#ML #SocialSciences #Science #Replicability: "In our past work, we have shown how errors affect hundreds of papers in over a dozen fields that have adopted ML methods, so we were skeptical of these claims. In our experience, models that try to predict consequential social outcomes are particularly likely to be flawed. Worse, these flaws are often inherent to the use of ML in these settings, and thus not fixable.

So we decided to dig in—through a collaboration led by our colleague, Princeton psychology professor Molly Crockett. Yale anthropology professor Lisa Messeri and Princeton psychology PhD student Xuechunzi Bai were our other collaborators.

We found that the model developed by the authors has major drawbacks, which we describe in a letter sent to PNAS, published earlier this week. We explain why the use of ML for estimating replicability cannot offer a shortcut to the hard work of building more credible scientific practices and institutions.

The model described in the paper was trained on an extremely small sample: just 388 past papers that had been evaluated for replicability in past efforts (such as from a landmark study by the Open Science Foundation)."

PRÁTICAS DA HISTÓRIA "is an online academic journal published at the NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities (NOVA FCSH) with the support of the IHC – Institute of Contemporary History and of CHAM – Centre for the Humanities. The main aim of the journal is the promotion of discussions on historical theory, historiography and the uses of the past".

An interesting journal. The theme of the last two issues (2022 and 2023) is "Political Uses of the Past: Public Memory of Slavery and Colonialism".

Most of the articles have been published in English, but some have also been published in Portuguese or Spanish.
