The new stairwell exhibition @tuhuraotagomuseum is being installed over the next few days. It is called "Director's Choice, wonderful things from the Collection". I was so lucky to be able to select some incredibly beautiful things like these tiny animal figures, which come from Mesopotamia and are thousands of years old. Human creativity is inspirational! #museums #NewZealand

So... in other news, To "celebrate" ten years at the helm, I am personally curating the next stairwell exhibition at Tūhura Otago Museum. I've had access to the whole collection and been allowed to choose some special things which appeal to me. I'm giving a talk about the choices on 7th April... https://otagomuseum.nz/whats-on/directors-choice-exhibition-talk #museums #NewZealand

I've been at the Bank of England tonight for a private viewing of their new exhibition, The Future of Money, for which I developed some #maths-focussed teacher resource packs (downloadable for free from the exhibition website).

Far from an afterthought, a maths resource pack was intended to accompany the exhibition from the early planning stages. This was really heartening and I look forward to seeing more #museums following this trend!

The Vent Haven Museum in Fort Mitchell, Ky., houses the world's largest collection of ventriloquism dummies. In this Atlas Obscura podcast, Dylan Thuras takes you to meet the 500 residents of the museum, including a replica of Charlie McCarthy, who was responsible for Mae West being banned from NBC radio for 12 years. Here's a link to the podcast, and to an article that describes what you'll find in the museum.

This 19th c. Chinese guardian lion, also known as a Foo dog or lion dog, is one half of a pair in our collection. Typically made of stone, large statues of guardian lions are often found at the entrances of temples and shrines to protect the building from harmful influences. 🐾

The begins this week, and Artsy has identified the to watch: “Working in an array of disciplines, including painting, sculpture, film, and installation, the artists in the exhibition examine notions of ‘the real,’ and what reality means in contemporary society where lived experiences are fractured, changing, and drastically varied. The creative interpretations address themes including migration, labor, ecological instability, gender, and identity.”

Across the world museum visitor numbers have returned to pre-pandemic levels.... except in the UK.

I wonder why that is: might it be the sinking profile of the UK caused by antagonism towards migrants, foreign students & the impact of Brexit?

Tourists are choosing to go elsewhere & while the tourist industry think it's because of a lack of duty free shops, I think we can safely say the problem is deeper than not getting cheap perfume, clothes & cigarettes!
