The Guardian have written an article about codebreaker Joan Clarke's new blue plaque, but have used a picture of a different Joan Clarke (who also worked at Bletchley Park): https://www.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/may/29/bletchley-park-codebreaker-joan-clarke-honoured-with-blue-plaque

Something I didn't think I'd hear today (or ever) but have, in fact, heard: "Would you like a flaccid poppadom?"

P.S. if you decide to adopt "flaccid poppadom" or a close derivative as a band name please pay me royalties.

"I can't draw" is almost (but not quite) as common a misconception as "I can't do #maths". Prove yourself wrong for one of these at Olivia's free drop-in #drawing workshop at @NPGLondon on 21st June:

In case anybody has somebody who works in a #Scottish #museum, #gallery, #archive, #library, or any other cultural organisation, I'd really appreciate a boost of this FREE training opportunity: #Maths in #Museums!

It's aimed at anyone who fits the aforementioned bill and is interesting in exploring the mathematical potential of their stories, objects and exhibitions, with participation in Maths Week Scotland in mind.

I've been at the Bank of England tonight for a private viewing of their new exhibition, The Future of Money, for which I developed some #maths-focussed teacher resource packs (downloadable for free from the exhibition website).

Far from an afterthought, a maths resource pack was intended to accompany the exhibition from the early planning stages. This was really heartening and I look forward to seeing more #museums following this trend!

Is anyone going to be in Budapest next Saturday? The Vasarely Museum is running an event: Math in the Streets - 3D Street Art.

"Join us on Saturday, 16 March and see how Vasarely designed images that seem to pop out and sink into the surface of the paper. Then design your own collage depicting a hole in the ground or in a wall.

The outdoor workshop for adults, teenagers and children is free.

Pop-up exhibition of student 3D Street Art from 12 pm to 1 pm in the museum."

Sounds great, if you can get to it!

Happy St David's day!

One of my favourite facts about #Wales and #Maths: The equals sign (=) was invented by Robert Recorde, from Tenby, in 1557.

It seems so strange that something as simple and ubiquitous as the equals sign had to be invented...!

I don't do new year's resolutions, but all the same it's as good a time as any to change something, or start something, or renew something. I'd like to do more writing this year, but I want it to be useful for some subset of people rather than just an outlet for me.

So...

  1. If you consider yourself to be a "not-maths" person in some way (or lack confidence, or struggle(d) with it), I'd like to answer any #maths-themed questions that you have. I'm not talking homework or exam questions. I'm thinking your personal queries about maths more generally. Stuff like "what does nth mean?", or anything else that you may be wondering. I occasionally post maths stuff at http://tommaths.blogspot.com .

  2. If you've got a burning question about #space, Blogstronomy still exists, though it's been very quiet for a while now. Maybe drop me a line and ask your question? (You can check I haven't already answered it here: https://blogstronomy.blogspot.com)

  3. If you think I might be able to write about something mathsy for your blog, website, publication (or museum exhibition) I'm totally up for that even (especially?) if you think there's no way maths could fit with what you do. I tend to link to external work I've done here: https://tkbriggs.co.uk/topics/portfolio/ (though it does need updating).

"I hate maths because I had a bad maths teacher"

"I hate books because I had a bad english teacher"

One of these is seen as a perfectly reasonable thing to say. The other one would prompt responses like "why the hell didn't you experience books anywhere other than a classroom?"

What #museums say:

"We've acquired funding to update our website!"

What museums mean:

"We're about to pay someone a small fortune to update our logo and tweak the colours a bit, maybe shrink the visible area and increase the whitespace. Oh, and add a flashy animation before the page loads, so that visitors can take even longer to find what they're looking for, hidden away on a random, untagged page with an unrelated title (assuming we've even thought of putting it on the website at all)."

Can anyone recommend a decent, portable USB-c multiport adapter (such as that pictured) _that has some extra USB-c sockets _?

It seems that you can get either a 4-port USB-c hub or a multiport adapter with no USB-c ports except one for power.

The only ports I need are a couple of extra USB-c sockets, a USB-c power input (that will pass this power through to the laptop) and some USB 2/3 sockets. Ideally it would also have an HDMI socket. Any other ports fall into the "might be useful one day, I guess" category.

For anyone in A∪B where A={People interested in my talk (hidden in and B={People who visit museums}, I had two requests/challenges I didn't get around to making:

When you visit a museum and spot some maths, then please (1) tell me about it and (if you feel that anyone less maths-obsessive than you might not notice that there is any maths), then (2) leave the museum a review or submit feedback which explicitly mentions that you'd've had a better time if the mathematics behind {thing, story, etc} had been made more readily apparent.

Museums care a lot about customer feedback & online (e.g. TripAdvisor) reviews so where maths in museums is concerned, if we come they will build it.

The worst thing about online learning is that everything has become a video. Every code tutorial. Every design tutorial. Nobody actually writes out a guide anymore.

It's just "hey guys welcome to my tutorial" and watching 10 minutes of content that mostly isn't relevant...

Though it did occur to me that if there's a motion on the floor it's best to stop whatever's happening and clean it up quickly.

Is there some sort of open mapping project that maps bicycle racks around the UK?

Asking for a friend who spends much of his time in Milton Keynes which is known as a bike-friendly city because you can cycle to just about anywhere in it safely. It's just that upon arrival you have to turn around and go home immediately because there's nowhere to lock your damned bike.

I think I know what it's asking for, but only due to the example provided. I see it more as an exercise in solving a near-gibberish riddle than practising a maths-adjacent skill, however.

You don't have to be a mathematician, or even "good" at , to help your learn maths. You just have to model resilience and positivity towards what they're doing, and to avoid reinforcing negative tropes.

Challenging adults to stop being openly negative about maths is hard because it's a pretty sore spot for some & we don't want to make anything worse (or start an argument). But leaving it to fester isn't good either.

So when you call out public negativity towards maths... How?
