Progressives and Leftists must put public libraries at the top of organizing agendas!

For the People--a leftist library project--is having a fundraiser to support their work. You can help by buying one of their new t-shirts! All proceeds will be used to support access costs for their events and other basic needs.

schlojj,

I am looking for a solution to scan ISBN (with my smartphone) and automatically search them in our catalogue. I need it for a very specific purpose: going through large amounts of books at fairs in a quick fashion. Only need to check availability.

I found an older Code4Lib article (see above) but I have no idea of coding and great optimism that there should be easier/newer solutions?

Any ideas appreciated, thank :)

  • Help build or support a shadow library that isn't on some white libertarian nonsense
    Then people don't have to use the above two

  • Destroy the multinational corporate behemoths behind the lawsuit

Don't allow anyone to gaslight you. The American Library Association (where I work, by the way) documented 1,269 demands to censor library books and resources in 2022, the HIGHEST NUMBER of attempted book bans since ALA began compiling data about censorship in libraries more than 20 years ago.

We must not remain silent as a tiny minority of loudmouths attempts to police our , , and public institutions. https://uniteagainstbookbans.org/.

A look inside an early modern book shop: a thread for and experts.

Expect surprises, nowadays book buyers. I am using printed images of the chapter dedicated to bookseller's shops of the "Orbis Sensualium Pictus" (Visible World in Pictures) from John Amos . The book was firstly published in 1658 and became a widely reprinted and variated children's textbook for centuries.

Enjoy, , and @bookstodon and @histodons.

dbellingradt,

Let's start with the obvious: this book shop is well organized, and does not invite to browse the offered titles. Why?

Because #backwardsbooks! You might remember that books in #libraries and #bookshops were shelved fore-edge outwards way into the eighteenth century. It was a bookish world in which authors and titles were often written in ink onto the fore-edges.

So as a buyer in 1658 you might choose to look at boxes or fore-edges, or talk to the bookseller at the desk.

Thank-you to the #IPLC #library directors for this strong statement in support of the White House #OSTP #OpenAccess policy initiative.
https://libraries.mit.edu/news/libraries-support-3/34036/

"Implementing the #NelsonMemo via an #APC model is antithetical to the equity goals so clearly articulated in the guidance memo and the values of our institutions."

@petersuber@fediscience.org avatar

Update. The statement is now on the #IPLC website.
https://ivpluslibraries.org/2023/03/iplc-letter-to-the-office-of-science-technology-policy/

Another excerpt: "As representatives of some of the most well-resourced #libraries in the country, we are committed to using our resources to promote public access to all research, not just the research our scholars produce. If public access to research outputs is achieved via a pay-to-publish model, we will have squandered an opportunity to promote #equity in scholarly communication."

Not sure who needs to hear this today, but remember, your local public library benefits from being used! Usage statistics are how librarians argue for funding! By using this shared service more, you are making it BETTER for everyone else!

It's the glory of the commons, not the tragedy of the commons. Go to the library!!!

Activists rally to save Internet Archive as a lawsuit from publishers threaten to shut it down https://decrypt.co/31906/activists-rally-save-internet-archive-lawsuit-threatens

If people are smart, it's time to archive the Archive right now. In other words, fork it and turn it unto a decentralized platform. I hope someone out there is working on that.

Plus you have to think libraries need some decentralization as well as this lawsuit could kill libraries as we know them.

With oral arguments of this monumental case set to begin on Monday (yes THIS Monday), here's Maria Bustillos (@maria) with a post today on what's at stake as Big Publishing and the Copyright Cartel looks to effectively kill the @internetarchive and perhaps libraries with a victory. https://www.thenation.com/article/culture/internet-archive-publishers-lawsuit-chatbot/

Long story short, not only this affects the future of the #InternetArchive and #libraries altogether but also (as mentioned) fact checking and truthful information as well.

A group of #librarians say that the @internetarchive is a library which that the four major publishers' lawsuit against them threatens the development of both print and digital collections. https://www.insidehighered.com/views/2023/03/17/librarians-should-stand-internet-archive-opinion

Here's a couple of articles to read post hearing and now we'll wait it out.

Ars' Ashley Belanger with a post titled: "Book publishers with surging profits struggle to prove #InternetArchive hurt sales" https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2023/03/book-publishers-with-surging-profits-struggle-to-prove-internet-archive-hurt-sales/

And Mike Masnick (@mmasnick) with this fitting title: "Book Publishers Won’t Stop Until #Libraries Are Dead" https://www.techdirt.com/2023/03/22/book-publishers-wont-stop-until-libraries-are-dead/

No matter what happens, I'm sure this will be appealed and it's likely that SCOTUS will have to be involved in the not too distant future.

joeo10,
@joeo10@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

Very gutted to hear this decision on a Friday Night Dump no less. I already said this will be appealed no matter what happens but it's not looking good for the future of the @internetarchive and most likely #libraries as we know them and I hope the Second Circuit understands what's at stake. https://www.docdroid.net/qM0MbI7/ia-sjm-order-pdf

@mmasnick has more on this: https://mastodon.social/@mmasnick/110081107772033421

As we all expect, the @internetarchive will appeal and the fight for the future of the #internetarchive and #libraries as we know it will continue. https://blog.archive.org/2023/03/25/the-fight-continues/

@brewsterkahle with the statement which is here.

EDIT: Posted the corrected link.

joeo10,
@joeo10@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

Here's @mmasnick with this very good post-ruling analysis. https://www.techdirt.com/2023/03/27/publishers-get-one-step-closer-to-killing-libraries/

Basically Publishers and the Copyright Cartel are basically one win away from not only killing the @internetarchive but also #libraries as we know them. I and many others hope that the Second Circuit gets it right to keep this alive.
