Gute Nacht, Freunde.

Today, I proofread 20 pages, took good care of myself, even cooked a meal.

No writing, alas. No brain space for it. But I have a long weekend now, and I hope I can finally dig into Sun and finish his story.

Of course, there's Valheim. Need to get back into the Swamp, after avoiding that for a while. (It's so dark and icky there.) Saw my first sea serpent and got it killed by a troll. Hah!

Life is good.

I need some new science fiction to read, who has some suggestions? I don't like military sci-fi. For reference, my favorite series is the Expanse, I also enjoyed Scalzi's Collapsing Empire, I love Robert Charles Wilson's books. I mostly enjoy space operas and unique stories about technology, for example I really liked the recent book Mountain in the Sea about AI and intelligent octopus. Suggestions from the awesome Bookstodon community? @bookstodon

@joeinwynnewood My point was, and @mcnado picked up on, was that Biden in his answer to press questions seemed to label all of the student protests as the product of antisemitism.

Beyond that, and I leave @mcnado out of this part, Biden seems to be content to discount Arab American people’s distress over friends and family being hunted and killed, whether outright or by starvation and removal of medical care in what is pretty obviously a genocidal land grab supported by at least some of the Israeli populace.

    This is, officially, AWESOME

    DiFluid lets you visually analyse and identify the micron size of coffee grinds, using it's app, your smartphone camera, and a printable disk. And they offer it more or less free of charge (you can download and use the app at no charge, but you really should also buy their scale).

    Do you KNOW the work I go through now with a Kruve sifter to check grind sizes for our reviews? It is wasteful, it takes forever, and it isn't terribly accurate either. This cannot be any less accurate, and it's WAY easier.

    You have to laugh, or you'd cry your eyes out.

    Video shows a cyclist's perspective of a brand new sidepath. As the cyclist approaches the entrance to a gas station, the sidepath's width is cut in half to allow room for a sign, advertising the price of gas at the gas station, and obscuring sidepath users from motorists turning out of the gas station.

    Gute Nacht, Freunde!

    Wrote 650 words for Sun this morning, which was really cool. I hope I can slide into a structure with a regular morning writing session.

    Survived the office. Walk home was great - I finally felt good and strong.

    Played Valheim and made good progress with a new base. Started setting up portals after I thought up a system to keep it all straight.

    And I had a coaching session which really, really helped once again. I'm starting to feel good in my skin.

    As we hear reports that it will take 10 years (🤯) to replace the 1.6 mile Francis Scott Key bridge in Baltimore, remember that China built the Danyang-Kunshan bridge and Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay Bridge in 4 years each.

    Danyang-Kunshan Bridge is 102 miles long, and 100 ft above the water.

    Jiaozhou Bay Bridge is 16 miles and 623 ft tall, earthquake and typhoon proof, and can withstand a direct strike from a 300,000 ton cargo ship. That last point is unfortunately topical.

    @hazelweakly @PJ_Evans @mekkaokereke My dad was a federal highway engineer back in the day and I remember him telling me that they were actually mandated to pass over bids that were thought to be unrealistically low. This is in marked contrast to my area where a contractor that I knew lost out on a bid to do the sidewalks on a huge project by so much that he actually took the time to recalculate it after the fact. And verified that the winning bid was less than the cost of the concrete alone. And we wonder why so much of our infrastructure is shit.
