Hunter, ER doc, believer in democracy. I’m here to rant, combat medical misinfo, and get social therapy. Posts aren’t medical advice. This is the only platform I am currently on. If you find “me” elsewhere, it isn’t me. If you have COVID vaccine questions, I’m always happy to try to answer. Let’s all share good info, facts, and science, and keep ourselves and each other safe! “You can’t love your country only when you win” — JB ‘24

Let’s talk American doctor work at home. The majority of physicians do a ton of work after they go home. We open our computer, open the medical record, and complete notes, answer patient messages, and answer work emails. Most of us do this on personally owned computers, or vaguely controlled work-supplied computers.

Why is this important? With MS copilot screenshotting everything, health systems will be forced to ban use of these computers. Now we can’t work at home. Work doesn’t get done.

Colorado’s GOP social media called for burning “all pride flags” this week.

Can you imagine the press response if the Dems called for burning all churches?

It’s the same. It’s a fucking call for violence. It is dangerous, stupid, extremist bullshit, and it is getting out of hand.

In 2016, Black Ops Arms owner Mark Limoges gifted Donald Trump an AR-15.

In light of the Hunter Biden firearms charge trial going forward, I would like to reiterate my support for holding everyone accountable, and must ask: where is Trump’s AR-15? He is ineligible to possess firearms at this time. Did he turn it over, sell it, gift it, lose it? Where’d it go?

Attending virtual EMS rounds with a neurologist and he said that recognition of strokes in women is a problem because they tend to present differently and as a result outcomes are worse. I had heard that about heart attacks but that's a new one for strokes. And so it's yet another area where we have gender disparity in health care.

mcnado,
@mcnado@mstdn.social avatar

@athena_rose922 both different symptoms sometimes, and huge bias on the part of providers. People always want to tell women they are anxious. As I always tell my medics — it isn’t anxiety or a panic attack unless the patient says it is. So many missed MIs and strokes and aortic dissections from people who were “oh yeah, she’s really anxious”. No shit. Because she’s dying.

There is now.

For the record, per BBC’s reporting a few months ago, there were only two verifiable dead babies from the Oct 7th attacks in Israel, and neither was burned. The attack by IDF in Rafah that incinerated a refugee encampment has killed at least that many, and there are verified photos of babies that were burned horrifically.

If you were horrified at Hamas in October (ya shoulda been!) you should be horrified at IDF today.

For the folks bitching about the university protests — another history lesson. In 1974, students, activists, and community members working to improve conditions for chicano students on the University of Colorado campus occupied a building for an extended time. The movement was marred by two car bombings that killed members of the movement (unclear who perpetrated these events).

Does anyone reading this think those students and activists were on the wrong side of history?

Burning down a refugee camp is not a tragic mishap, especially if you first burned down the refugees original homes, their hospitals, their water pumps and treatment plants, and their fields. No, it is not a mishap. It is an intentional act of violence against people who have lost everything.

The thing I don’t understand about folks who support what Israel is doing in Gaza is this — if as a child/teen, someone bombed their home, killed their family, made them see their friends incinerated or dismembered, what would they do?

Do people not understand how terrorism thrives? Hopeless young people, with little left to lose, are prime targets for terrorist recruiters. Give them a common enemy, and you’re all set. Israel has created another generation of two of Hamas.

Remember folks, before Dobbs, Republicans claimed abortion was too unsafe to be performed in a clinic, but now in Florida they think C-sections can be. It was never about safety.

mcnado, to random
@mcnado@mstdn.social avatar

Florida allowing clinics to perform C-sections outside of the hospital is a horrendous handout to private equity on the backs of women and babies.

For perspective, driving DOWN the C-section rate is literally a quality metric for hospitals. Widespread availability elective C-sections doesn’t improve outcomes, can cause future complications, and of course C-sections are high-risk, often frenetic surgeries. This should not be performed somewhere that doesn’t have NICU and ICU services, period.

Do I want Biden to do more to get Israel to stop killing civilians? Yes. Do I think US dollars should ever go to Israel? No. Fuck ‘em. They have an economy. They have nukes. They can protect themselves. We have no business being tied up with them, particularly since Israel has backstabbed the US for decades.

AND,

Much of US-Israel policy is tied up in legislation and treaties that Biden can do fuckall about, and Israel has a huge and effective lobby.

I’m just gonna say it — this “Genocide Joe” thing is the dumbest fucking liberal shit I have seen in years.

Joe Biden can do more to try to rein in Israel, but Biden doesn’t run Israel. He isn’t CIC for IDF. He isn’t deciding what hospital to bomb. He isn’t deciding what border crossings to close.

You know who is pushing the Genocide Joe narrative? The fucking Russians and the Israelis. Why is that? Well, it’s an election year, and Trump is a hard right, pro-Israel puppet.

@msquebanh @blueemu I think it is pretty clear the US is a trash ally anymore. We have half the country supporting fascism, and our obligations to longstanding allies like those in NATO are up in the air every four years. We fucked the Cubans. We fucked Ukraine. We fucked our allies in Afghanistan. We fucked the YPG in Syria. The list goes on.

I want us to be better, but we aren’t.

If you’re going to put dog waste in the wrong bin, why even pick it up at all? How fucking lazy do you have to be to not just carry it home with you like all the rest of us with dogs?

The current SCOTUS continues to do what they’ve been doing since Dobbs. They make one decision that is pretty middle of the road “yep, that’s the right call”, and then the next five or six big decisions are all deeply unpopular, and wildly partisan. They think people don’t see the systematic erosion of democracy, separation of church and state, and equality. They are so fucking removed from actual society that they think this will all blow over.

Two ways to look at the 2nd known human case of H5N1 in the US — one is to say oh heck another case, that’s not good. The other way of looking at it is that there are thousands of infected cows interacting with hundreds of dairy employees, and we’ve found two cases, both of whom had pinkeye.

Now is a great time to remind everyone venturing into the #backcountry in #Colorado that until July, it is functionally still winter at altitude. It often freezes at night, and can be very cold and wet for days on end. Carry clothing layers, dry backups, and gear to survive wet nights below freezing. Expect deep, wet snow in the woods, making route finding difficult, and travel frankly exhausting and slow. Weather can go from T-shirts to needing a parka in minutes as storms hit the divide.

Weather comes over the divide with no warning, the last few moves to the summit are slick as hell in the wet, and when there is snow in the couloir on the back, people are looking a few thousand feet down with no protection. Honestly blows my mind that more people don’t die.
