40 years ago today, it was revealed that the world is flat, and carried through space on the backs of four giant elephants named Tubul, Jerakeen, Berilia and Great T'Phon, who in turn stand on the back of Great A'Tuin, the star turtle.
Happy Birthday Discworld, and happy publication day to The Colour of Magic
(Of course, if you're not in the US, they've already made the choice for you. Thanks terrible international intellectual property laws!)
Until today, my experience buying #ebooks from Humble Bundle was they were always available unencumbered by #DRM. I have hundreds of #DRMFree#epubs built up over the past decade.
The #PratchettDiscworldHumbleBundle is through #Rakuten#Kobo's ebook shop, and all the books are encumbered by #Adobe and the #AdobeDigitalEdition DRM. There is zero indication that this DRM is included on the bundle page itself. and it explicitly says "Use on Any Device". On the #RakutenKobo page itself, the only indication the file has DRM is some small bottom-text that says "Download Options: EPUB 3 (Adobe DRM)".
Also, DRM Digital Editions will also "helpfully" install Norton for you as well. It's like the dogshit you just stepped in offered to stab you in the kidney, too.
This is shameful and disgusting from Humble Bundle. I know Humble Bundle got acquired years ago by IGN/Ziff Davis, but they'd avoided the levels of #enshittification to make me stop using them.
On this day, in 1983, The Colour of Magic was published and the Discworld was unleashed on the Roundworld! What is your favourite thing about the Discworld and/or the best thing being a fan of the Discworld has done for you?
40 years ago today, on the 24th of November 1983, the first Discworld book, "The Colour of Magic" was published.
After this, Sir Terry Pratchett averaged two novels a year until the posthumous release of The Shepherds Crown in 2015.
It's impossible for me to overstate the impact Discworld books have had on me. The world is a far lesser place with the loss of Sir Terry. A man who, driven by anger, still managed to fill the world with love.
Last year I found this plastic Halloween skeletal rattie but then we moved house and the project had to pause.
I’ve finally got round to make my little Death of Rats a cowl.
Now he just needs a scythe and an hourglass. And better blue glowy eyes somehow. #Discworld#Pratchett
Here's a page from the November 1983 edition of LOCUS. On one side, a review of the just-out SO YOU WANT TO BE A WIZARD. And on the other, the review of a brand new book by some guy named Pratchett. "Sounds like fun," I thought. "Must get a copy."😄 Happy Birthday, #Discworld! 🍾
Bon.
“But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.
This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness.”
“The world belongs, however, to those who can look at the glass and say: ‘What’s up with this glass? Excuse me? Excuse me? This is my glass? I don’t think so. My glass was full! And it was a bigger glass! And at the other end of the bar the world is full of the other type of person, who has a broken glass, or a glass that has been carelessly knocked over (usually by one of the people calling for a larger glass)…”

“You ain’t really allowed to do that,” said Albert, feeling wretched.
"THE HOGFATHER CAN. THE HOGFATHER GIVES PRESENTS. THERE’S NO BETTER PRESENT THAN A FUTURE."
Apart from Death's speech at the end of the book, probably my favourite bit from the Hogfather. It feels like a very Pratchett moment, and really shows where the heart of the Discworld series lies.
Pratchett power: from lost stories to new adaptations, how the late Discworld author lives on.
It’s 40 years since The Colour of Magic hit the shelves. As newly unearthed short stories are published, fans and friends celebrate the late author’s enduring legacy #GNUTerryPratchett#Discworld#terrryPratchett

“… it wasn’t the wearing of the hats that counted so much as having one to wear. Every trade, every craft had its hat. That’s why kings had hats. Take the crown off a king and all you had was someone good at having a weak chin and waving to people. Hats had power. Hats were important.”

For anyone wondering, the hashtag I habitually use on follow thank yous #TheMammutMoves was created by way of an indication of rebellion against the bird site & especially the super rich powers that govern our world.
However it is based on a quote from #TerryPratchett ‘s #discworld namely “The Turtle Moves” and can therefore be used as a sign of rebellion against pretty much anything! 🫶🖖
jk rowling: there are only four types of people in the world - smart, brave, evil and miscellaneous. a magic hat tells you which one you are when you are 11 years old, and it will never change
'I didn’t have white hair in those days,’ said Granny.
‘Everything was a different colour in those days.’
‘That’s true.’
‘It didn’t rain so much in the summer time.’
‘The sunsets were redder.’
‘There were more old people. The world was full of them,’ said the wizard.
‘Yes, I know. And now it’s full of young people. Funny, really. I mean, you’d expect it to be the other way round.' — Equal Rites
