It's very important to me that you know whenever I write the word "books" I want you to read it as Peter Falk's Princess Bride delivery of "When I was your age, television was called books".

Also that when my wife says "as you wish" I see her as Cary Elwes (not entirely bad)

@PixelBandits I should probably watch that film at some point.

I’m sick and tired there is now AI in every app. ”Update: We have now AI in this-and-that feature.”

Fuck that.

Why do humans always feel the need to fix something that is not broken?

#Enshittification

bitflipped,
@bitflipped@mastodon.world avatar

@rolle we don't need to worry about AI coming after humanity. There are so many AI startups, and companies "shifting focus" to it, that the AI implementations will be too busy fighting each other.

I enjoyed it a lot, I’m not sure if there are more Rincewind books but whilst I enjoyed him as a character, I’m looking forward to reading about another part of the Disc next

I'm not going to ask "if you remember this" because we're not engagement farming and OF COURSE YOU DO.

We've only just begun with our Mega Drive collection... But I'm very glad that we were able to get a good price with this and it arrived today.

Sonic had such an impact for me, early in my gaming journey. I think I'll always love him ❤️

@PixelBandits if you were going to farm engagements, Sonic is a good way to do it as you'll need to collect a lot of rings.

I have now seen multiple, multiple people run into the same set of obstacles with #ActivityPub. Some of them bounce off entirely, some stick with it, but they all run into the same approximate issues in similar places of the dev cycle.

That's one of the major situations I'd like to see improve in 2024 on the #fediverse. Above any feature other than trust and safety related items.

I'd like to see it become easier to develop in this space, with confidence that you are doing the right thing.

bitflipped,
@bitflipped@mastodon.world avatar

@hrefna I was surprised at how difficult I found the spec(s) to read compared to theoretically more complex ones I've read in the past. I put it down to it being heavily based on abstract concepts, as that sounded better than "You're just getting old, Cameron"

rolle, to fediverse
@rolle@mementomori.social avatar

Over the past year these are the top arguments against the Fediverse:

  1. Too left wing
  2. Too difficult
  3. Not enough people
  4. Not enough mutuals
  5. Too nerdy / too niche
  6. Too confusing
  7. Too ugly
  8. Too many different options and apps
  9. Too many servers
  10. Not owned by a corporation (yes, really, one person told me he prefers an oligarch)
  11. There is no algorithm
  12. Hard to discover people

Many of these are based on the attitude and feeling, but there is some truth to it, for example discoverability is still a bit of an issue. I personally find most of the Fediverse web UIs clunky considering the big world standards, but I’m sure they will get better over time.

bitflipped,
@bitflipped@mastodon.world avatar

@rolle There isn't really a hook with mass appeal. I'm guessing most reasons that drew the current user base to the Fediverse are only relevant to a particular Internet subculture, as existed in smaller numbers back in the late 90s and early 2000s.

I think the Fediverse, as it works currently, is more likely to attract the type of people who would have wound up on IRC and Usenet, not necessarily those who were perfectly happy with things like web chat and email as they did the job.

So I'm the culprit here? Wow. I don't get it.

bitflipped,
@bitflipped@mastodon.world avatar

@rolle fairly certain that a person with enough followers, on any social network, could post "Have a nice weekend, everyone" and get blocked by at least one person for trying to dictate how they live their life.

The default user interface needs really a designer's touch. Look at the bell and the copy "stack" icon here in relation to each other. Then gaze over the star and bookmarks icons in relation to each other. Also take a look at the spacing between the icons and the edge or the start of the textual label. There's work to be done right there.

Some day I'll do it and send a massive PR as a suggestion for these all tiny things. I have been afraid to do this partly because then it will be "Too Twitter!" and dumped/nitpicked with wide criticism.

This is why I originally created Mastodon Bird UI, so I don't have to limit myself AT ALL. I could just go ahead and do it "as Twitter looking" as I like.

Also GNU folks: Why does everyone think we’re three misogynistic 12-year-old boys in a neckbeard suit?

There are so many low hanging fruits for you folks to embrace inclusivity and make a dedicated effort to clean up your act but you seem too bloody busy pissing all over the tree to mark your territory.

@engravecavedave @aral before all the complaints about the name of the software, I wasn't aware of the fact that it can also mean someone with a physical disability. In the UK, I've only ever heard it used to call someone stupid.

I'm not a fan of the name regardless tbh, but I think the "master" thing is a bit of a stretch considering that's a default branch name that predates even Git, and people are moving away from it now.

@Mastodon displaying information about the person being replied to and the old post warnings are really great ideas.

I'm not sure the reminders about post etiquette will do much more than take up screen space, though. Whenever Twitter added something like that, it always came across as performative, i.e. "Well, we've told people to play nice, so we are doing our part!"

Pixelfed announces leadership transition

The board of directors of Pixelfed.org that acts as the overall governing body for all Pixelfed activities, today announced that Daniel Supernault will depart as CEO and leave the board of directors.

Tuk Cat, the company’s chief meow officer, will serve as interim CEO, effective immediately.

Also, dogs and any content including dogs are now banned across Pixelfed, effective immediately.

@dansup My cat doesn't bother trying that. She just stares at me like this, until her eyes drilling into the depths of my very soul become too much to bear, and I just cave.

On the rare occasion that I don't give in fast enough, she just gets closer and closer, or, if I'm sitting at my desk chair, hurls herself at the headrest and perches behind my head to really drive the message home.

When I was a youngster in the late 1980s, I formed an Amiga game dev team with 2 friends.

Before making games, we started by trying to sell game music that used minimal RAM, made with our music editor SIDmon.

To promote our game music, this energetic music module was composed by our musician Ramon Braumuller. The file, including tiny sampled sounds, is only 22 kilobytes.

Check the hashtag for more tunes.
