In one in the eye for Apple; we had a spare Pëncil knocking about the house - a cheapy rip off one from Amazon that functions exactly like a gen 1, but charges with USB instead of Lightning.

Since I got my iPad mini it’s gone unused because as far as I was concerned the mini could only work with a gen 2 Pencil.

Turns out that ain’t true.

With a USB-C > A adapter, then a regular USB charging lead, the Pëncil is now paired with my iPad and works perfectly fine wirelessly.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

I figured that maybe it was just working as a regular stylus somehow, so tried it on my phone.

Nope. Did nothing.

The Pencil option is showing in Settings, but it’s not in my list of Bluetooth devices, though I don’t remember if a genuine Pencil shows up there either.

So yeah, a £30 Pëncil working with my 6th gen iPad mini. That’ll do.

Remember the exams I sat 10 weeks ago that I was really nervous about?

Well, finally got the results today!

…and I failed them both…

sigh

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

I won’t lie, it’s been three hours since I got the results, and I’m only just in a place where I can tlak about it on here.

@Troggie has been incredible at helping to calm me down, and my manager has given me some constructive feedback.

But ultimately, I’m just confused.

According to the results page I only got 25 marks in the open book exam, while the passing grade is 45. I get that the exam is tough, but only 25 marks seems low. Incredibly low.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

My manager has the same qualification, he read through my paper before I submitted and offered constructive feedback (though not actual answers).

Either someone has fucked up somewhere, I’m misreading the results, or I really fucked the exam.

I really don’t want it to be the latter, because 20 marks below a pass indicates a level of misunderstanding great enough that it’s making me question whether there’s any value in trying again.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

@Supermouse There are two sections to the qualification; the exam, and a practical assessment. I failed both.

The practical comes with detailed feedback, and of the 18 sections to be marked, I only failed one. But you have to meet the criteria of all. That’s (kinda) fine.

But the exam comes with nothing. I’ve had to email the examining body to request a breakdown, which may take several more days.

I’m not best pleased.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

But here lies my confusion: There are two sections to the qualification; an open book exam, and a practical assessment.

The practical comes with a breakdown of the 18 sections for marking, and whether I met/did not meet the criteria. Of those 18 sections, I didn’t meet one. 17/18 I covered what was needed. But you have to meet all 18 for a pass. That’s fine.

But that 17/18 doesn’t tally up with only getting 25% on the open book exam. It doesn’t make any sense at all.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

I could understand 25% if I’d literally just put bullet point answers, without adding any context, but that seems absurdly low.

If I’d got 43% then I’d have been angry with myself, but I’d have requested a re-mark, and arranged to resit if needed be.

But I’m a smart guy (I think). I’m literally doing health and safety as my job. I understood the questions it was asking and new how to answer them.

And then got 25%.

And I don’t understand it.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

@eleanorrees Nope. I checked it and rechecked it. I made sure I covered everything and that all the word counts were within the limits. I crossed my t’s and dotted all the lower case j’s.

Then my manager cast his eye over it to make sure I hadn’t missed anything obvious.

Why do all new kitchens look like spaceships these days? Everything is white, flat and featureless.
No hate if this is your kitchen and you love it.
I'm just pondering what happened to colour. And cupboard handles.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

@miffyhelen @Troggie I think it’s similar to how cars all all the same boring, flat colours now: it’s a fear of lowering the resale value.

Just seen a post with a content warning because it contained a mention of food.

I have opinions, but it would be uncharitable to share them.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

@RolloTreadway @intheseheels @matt Yeah, I get that it’s a tricky one, I really do.

I suppose I rolled my eyes a bit because I’m grumpy and tired today. Also, I’m a Certified Fat Lad with my own personal issues around food and bingeing, but can’t imagine seeing a mention of good soup causing any particular distress.

But yeah, each CW ultimately comes from a place of compassion.

Had a dawning realisation on the walk to work this morning that I’m cruising once again into work burnout territory.

It’s not that I work super hard - I really don’t - it’s that part of my job physically requires me to go into the workshop to carry out inspections on things, and I really don’t enjoy that bit because it’s huge and unfinishable. So I make myself busy by doing all the office stuff I can, giving me the chance to sit here with my headphones on, listening to music.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

But that shit in the workshop ain’t going anywhere, and in fact, it’s getting worse, because stuff is going more and more out of date.

And all I want to do it take two weeks off, two weeks where I have absolutely no responsibilities, not to work, not to tidying my house or making meals. Two weeks where I can just sleep and read and play games and enjoy the sun if it’s shining and not have to do anything productive or grown up.

But I can’t.

Im going to have a cup of tea and I'm really excited!

I heard the ancient wisdom again this morning, in a book that pointed out it keeps being ratified again and again in modern scientific enquiry:

happiness comes exclusively from wanting what you have, and not at all from having what you want.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

@falcennial “we consume incredible wonders and are often miserable while we do it.”

Ain’t this the truth. We use agitated sand and harnessed electrons encased in metal to talk to people around the world, and we bitch about how the company who assembled that sand didn’t agitate it well enough and charged us too much for it.

Catching up with @DJDarren s show on LABR.
Two Stevie Nicks variants? Good call :)
So, sneak peak at next week's theme?

Also annoyed I missed Feist "1234" as a suggested track...

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

@Nikkileah Thank you for listening!

I need to give some thinks to next week’s theme…

And yeah, you’ve just reminded me that Feist did 1234 on Sesame Street, which would have fitted in perfectly!

Never forget.....

Findus Crispy Pancakes were found to contain 100% horse meat. A whole generation of British kids grew up eating horses. I feel like that should be more of a thing. Maybe that's got something to do with the UKs mental health epidemic. Mental horselth epidemic (nope that doesn't work at all). But maybe we're all sad all the time due to eating a bunch of horses by surprise. SURPRISE, MOTHERFUCKERS! You just ate a horse. How do you feel now? This is what capitalism does to families.
