#Google just announced that going forward, any account not logged into for two years gets deleted.
This means huge amounts of rare or unique #video is about to disappear from #YouTube as accounts get flagged as inactive, such as when the user dies. Families' #HomeMovies (often posted by an older relative for their family's benefit), historical footage, rare #television clips, etc. What an incalculable loss to human #history and culture!
If there are videos important to you on someone else's video channel, find a way to download them. And if you have rare #media of historical importance, consider leaving it to institutional #archives or lending it to archives for digital preservation.
I just visited a site that 'archives' articles from 2015. The majority of links no longer works.
What to do? You could archive pages, and link to the archived pages (I've seen many people do this). But how durable is that? Will those archival sites exist still in 10 years time?
I'm used to consult books that are centuries old. That we're unable now to archive digital stuff for longer than a couple of years is terrifying. #archives#digitalhumanities
We are the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research (WCFTR), an archive preserving materials from the entertainment industries. We are home to over three hundred collections from playwrights, television and movie writers, producers, actors, designers, directors, and production companies.
Housed in the Wisconsin Historical Society’s Library-Archives Division, the WCFTR is one of the world’s most accessible #archives and is regularly visited by researchers from around the world. Research undertaken in its collections has revolutionized the scholarship of American #cinema, #theater, and #television.
We use social media to share news about new collections, upcoming events, interesting materials we've found, and projects that we're working on -- as well as learning about what you're working on!
An Archives qualification isn’t explicitly mentioned, though experience organizing and describing cultural heritage is essential. The role is based in London, hybrid is fine, remote work is considered.
This is going to be such a fun, creative role - I hope we’ll see some unconventional applicants!
Bonjour !
I found yesterday that hundreds of 2D Artist Magazine where uploaded to the Internet Archive, and I really enjoy browsing them for the quality tutorials, interviews and amazing artist portfolios. I thought some of you here might like it as well: https://archive.org/details/2dartistmagazine
Here’s a cautionary tale about digitisation of #archives
For the WW1 centenary, the National Library of Wales created cymru1914.org, to pull together scans of primary sources relating to the period. By all accounts it was brilliant.
Naturally, like all such projects, the site disappeared once the money ran out, taking everything with it. Rip.
I'm David, once an archaeologist and classicist, pretty much always a nerd. Currently working at the Swedish National #Archives leading its little Digital Experiences team.
'A carpenter living on the Faroe Islands off the northern coast of Europe packaged up a handmade red sweater and a small note.
“My wife sends her regards,” the note read. “Thank you for the pudding rice. She sends your fiancé this sweater and hopes that it is not displeasing to her.”
The gift was sent on a ship in 1807 and intended for Copenhagen, Denmark. It never arrived.'
It's frightening how little attention the US press has given to the continuing aftereffects of the British Library cyber attack. If it can happen there, it can happen almost anywhere.
👋Hi, thought I would take the time to do a little #introduction here! 👋
Hello, I’m Ella! A Science Communicator who has just handed in her Honours thesis on ‘unfurling #audience ‘. I’m most interested in #STEM + #art intersections, science accessibility, and STEM equity.
Creating a city for all of us: a role for the Fediverse in archiving civic urban memory. A preprint on SocArxiv of my paper (Trevor Norris co author) on how the Fediverse could help to create instances of urban civic memory archives using place-name/geocoded posts and instance cache archiving. technically a laymans view (me!), but feedback on technical or other aspects gratefully received :)
OMG CE SITE 🤩

A document from 1986 was described by a student as "pretty old" and it turns out that the entire department wasn't ready to be personally roasted this early on a Monday morning. #archives
This is a great opportunity for a recent Ph.D., MLIS, or M.A. in Archives to spend a year working with researchers and archivists to improve access to undigitized primary sources.
For the purposes of anonymity and HIPAA I'll just be general in saying that, anytime I get a librarian for the patient, my excitement goes through the roof, I talk about their necessity in this age of corporate vaulting & enshittifying things, and thank them profusely for their service to humanity.
