@researchbuzz@researchbuzz.masto.host

Obsessed with search engines, databases, and online information collections forever. Writing books & such since 1996, ResearchBuzz since 1998. Autistic and too tired to hide it. Pronouns: she/they/hey you.

We could be doing a lot more with authoritative structures (and without AI) to make good Web search.

Strongly recommend you read my pinned posts before you reply.

'The rediscovery of a long-forgotten slave narrative would be notable enough. But this one, scholars who have seen it say, is unique for its global perspective and its uncensored fury, from a man living far outside the trans-Atlantic network of white abolitionists who often limited what the formerly enslaved could write about their experiences.'

@StillIRise1963 GOOD MORNING READ THIS ^^^

researchbuzz,
@researchbuzz@researchbuzz.masto.host avatar

@StillIRise1963 I was thinking this morning that pride in the deeds of one's ancestors without shame at their mistakes is just propaganda. Looking at it from that perspective I understand better cultural propaganda but also the idea of propaganda as simply history without empathy.

adelgado, to DuckDuckGo
@adelgado@eu.mastodon.green avatar

Because of the current issue with Bing that affects DuckDuckGo and Qwant, I did a "research" (5 min look into https://alternativeto.net/software/google-search/?license=opensource ) and found Searx and Searxng. I'm giving a try to Searxng, so far so good finding issues with Ubuntu 24.04 and Wayland. But I keep thinking that there should be a federated way to search the Internet

researchbuzz,
@researchbuzz@researchbuzz.masto.host avatar

@adelgado What an interesting idea. Search "instances," each an aspect of your searched index, with groups of sources aggregating, annotating, and maintaining lists of resources of interest/importance to them.

There would be lots of overlap but that would be good because you use that information for weighting results.

researchbuzz,
@researchbuzz@researchbuzz.masto.host avatar

@adelgado I guess I don't think about instant results anymore. I'm so used to waiting for someone's damn Google Analytics script to load

In total, 34 per cent of the "low credibility" content posted to the site between January and October of 2020 was created by the 10 users identified by researchers based in the US and UK.'

Launch a shit product and try to cash out to the tune of a billion. Da fuq.

'The wearable startup Humane, makers of the bizarre Humane AI Pin, is already looking for the exit. Bloomberg reports the company is seeking a sale after its first and only product launch was a big flop. Despite seemingly having nothing else in the pipeline and the AI Pin being dead on arrival, Bloomberg reports the company is "seeking a price of between $750 million and $1 billion in a sale."'

One of my many strategies for using Google less is keeping MegaGladys pinned so I can do Wikipedia searches directly instead of running them through a Google search.

This is taught me how many times a day I check something on Wikipedia (a lot)....

Hmm, just saw an article on Engadget citing "Business Wire reports" 🙄

(Business Wire is a wire news service, where companies pay to put out their press releases. It is not a news organization, and does not vet the press releases it sends out for companies).

researchbuzz,
@researchbuzz@researchbuzz.masto.host avatar

@ai6yr Argh! I index BW and PRNewswire, but the headlines are followed by "(PRESS RELEASE)." Like, know that part before you start reading.

researchbuzz,
@researchbuzz@researchbuzz.masto.host avatar

@ai6yr Yeah, I would NEVER use it as a source in a story. If I found their information that compelling I'd just, dunno, talk to 'em directly.

I'm not sure what Granny sees when she's watching TV. I think she thinks it's some kind of window. Anyway, there was a lady winking on a commercial today and Granny got really mad.

"That woman is winking at me and I don't like it!" I mean she was ready to throw hands. So I said, "If that woman winks at you again you tell her to go on. Tell her if she don't go on I'll come along and FIX her UP."

That suited Granny's bloodthirsty mood. "That's right! You'll fix her up in a HURRY!" 🤣

I got the last part of Nosy Raleigh done!

I 100% understand why City of Raleigh and other Raleigh government offices maintain and use a Twitter account. City of Raleigh alone has over 120K followers and those people shouldn't just be abandoned. At the same time, Twitter is getting increasingly gross and I don't want to use it to keep up with city government.
