Toxic Gaslighting: How 3M Executives Convinced a Scientist the Forever Chemicals She Found in Human Blood Were Safe

Decades ago, Kris Hansen showed 3M that its PFAS chemicals were in people’s bodies.

Her bosses halted her work.

As the now forces the removal of the chemicals from drinking , she wrestles with the secrets that 3M kept from her and the world.

Norway has one of the lowest crash death rates in the world, with fatalities dropping ~50% in the last decade. I asked a senior Norwegian transportation official what role car technology has played enhancing safety.

“None,” she replied. “We focus on road design and enforcement."

A huge victory in the fight against car bloat.

Did you know that #Roman road design included #safety features?

In the ruins of #Pompeii, you'll notice small white stones interspersed with the large paving ones along the extensive roads.

Those white #stones are 'cats eyes', i.e. gems that have a single line of inclusion of crystals of another mineral inside.

Upon light reflecting on them (from the #moon), they enable the walker to see that they are still on the right path!

New IIHS study finds that trucks & SUVs with hoods > 40 inches tall are 45% more likely to kill pedestrians than cars with low hoods.

Vertical/blunt hoods make vehicles even more deadly.

Reminder: NHTSA and USDOT continue to ignore these risks.

Some words about Mastodon moderation:

  1. It’s hard. No decision is easy and there’s lots of gray area even with explicit rules.
  2. We’ll sometimes debate for a long time on a single post. We do our best to make the right call.
  3. Even so, we sometimes make mistakes. We’re willing to accept appeals when that happens.
  4. We get a lot of things right. You can’t even imagine some of the traumatic things we see.

The FEMA emergency test is this coming Wednesday, October 4.

If you hide a phone for safety’s sake, power it all the way down before 11:20 pacific time, and keep it off for at least 30 minutes after the test.

Phone on silent won’t work.

Colorado is considering a weight-base car fee to address car bloat:

🔹 Fee would would apply to cars >3,500 lbs, up to $29.90/yr (should be higher, but it's a start)

🔹 $$ collected would fund bike lanes, road diets, automatic cameras, etc

🔹 Only collected in the 12 most populous counties

Just a reminder that on the 4th of October, the US government will be testing their Emergency Broadcast System to check its compliance on the 5G band.

This will not, despite cries of shock and fear, cause a zombie apocalypse. But for those in a dangerous situation, domestically or otherwise, it can be extremely threatening, because many need to make use of hidden/burner phones which their abusers don't know about.

(Abusive family or significant others have a tendency to install tracking devices and similar spyware on any devices known to them.)

For those in an abusive situation, please stay safe, and if you have a phone or similar device of that nature, please take whatever steps you can to disable it if you need to keep it hidden. Some information can be found here.

My favorite mobility policy of 2023: Banning right-on-red

Inherently dangerous to pedestrians, ROR was widely adopted in order to conserve gas during the 1970s oil crisis (which, you might notice, ended decades ago).

Ann Arbor ditched ROR this year, and DC is about to. Denver, Chicago, and San Francisco may as well.
