One (far from perfect) way of measuring integration of migrants into society is to compare their incarceration rate with the 'native' population.
Interestingly, the trend in Anglophone countries is that migrants are less likely to be imprisoned (surely a surprise fore the UK's rabid right), but elsewhere are more likely, suggesting they're less well integrated?
Of course, this is just one slice of data & doesn't account for wider range of social issues!
It seems likely (if not stated) that once again the UK will be seeking to prosecute the easily available on the boat from/on which the most recent migrant deaths occurred.
They will not have tracked down the traffickers, but rather will (again) likely be seeking to prosecute people who were trapped into helping the board navigate the channel.
I may be wrong but once again (unsurprisingly) the UK will likely be attacking the victims not the profiteers.
'It has resulted in mass displacement, #violence and potential #genocide, jeopardising millions of lives. While the United States (US) and other European nations have publicly expressed concern at the United Nations Security Council, Britain’s silence speaks volumes.'
Is migration often caused by (or at least exacerbated by) political corruption in the countries migrants are leaving?
If so this would explain why policies intended to constrain migration seldom work - they are dealing with the symptom not the problem?
Interesting stuff, and suggests (rightly) too much migration policy is driven by prejudice & idiocy not a real appreciation of the actual situation migrants find themselves in.
Whatever we might think about how migration is handled across Europe (in in the UK), one significant result is the underemployment of skilled migrants;
the Migration Policy Institute has a whole subsection on what they refer to as 'Brain Waste' - given the skills shortages across the world & its economic impact(s), we seem to be acting against our best interests because we are (politically) suspicious of migrants;
The colonial biometric legacy at heart of new #EU#asylum system
"On Wednesday (10 April), the EU is set to vote on a new set of asylum and migration reforms. Among the many controversial changes proposed in the new migration pact, one went almost unnoticed — a seemingly innocent reform of the EU's asylum database, #EURODAC.
Although framed as purely technical adjustments, the reality is far more malicious. The changes to EURODAC will massively exacerbate violence against people on the move.
Reform of this 20 year-old database will make it the technological sword of EU's hostile asylum and border policies. It will harness the most nefarious surveillance #technologies that exist to date — namely the capture, processing and analysis of biometric data — and enable EU states to have full control over #migrants' body and movements....."
