#TodayILearned that the delicious Mexican fruit sauce #Chamoy probably derives its name and recipe from the #Philippines’ “kiamoy”, which is a fruit sauce made with the same recipe. That recipe was in turn derived from a #Hokkien#Chinese recipe brought by Chinese immigrants, who called it 鹹梅 “kiam-mui” (literally: salted plums).
As a Hokkien descendant who loves #Mexican#fruit salads, this makes me happy.
Greetings, myth lovers! To celebrate #CincoDeMayo, today's theme is: #Mexican and Mexican-American myths and legends. Write out a story and use the hashtag #MythologyMonday for boosts. See you all soon!
"Despite having a sizable #Jewish community of 100,000, #Mexican#Jews are often not represented in the media. The seven-part “Eitan Explores: Mexico City,” released May 13, follows the culinary star as he learns more about Mexican Jewish culture, cooks classic Jewish-Mexican cuisine and spends #Shabbat in Mexico City."
"With over 40,000 #Jews in #Mexico City, hailing from all different parts of the world, their culture and food is a beautiful mix of homely #Jewish cooking and authentic #Mexican#cuisine. It's this very blend that’s brought award-winning entertainer, television personality, and social media star, Eitan Bernath to unearth Mexico's hidden Jewish #culinary history.
Mexico City in many ways is a perfect microcosm of this diasporic history, with a Jewish population that spans #Ashkenazi, #Sephardi, and #Mizrachi#food stories all beautifully melding with traditional Mexican flavors."
After autoworkers in Coahuila, Mexico, organized an independent union at a VU Manufacturing facility, the company shuttered the plant and fired all the workers. Now local business elites have imposed a hiring blacklist on all the former VU workers.
Today in Labor History November 6, 1968: Students at San Francisco State College went on strike, leading to what would become the longest student strike in U.S. history. The strike was led by the Black Student Union and a coalition of other student groups (including Indigenous, Hispanic, Philippine, and Asian students) known as the Third World Liberation Front. The Black Panthers and Students for a Democratic Society were also involved. The strike lasted until March 20, 1969. Throughout the strike, activists were violently attacked by the San Francisco Police. The activists were demanding equal access to public higher education, more senior faculty of color, an end to ROTC, and a new curriculum that would embrace the history and culture of all people including ethnic minorities. One of their victories was the creation of the College of Ethnic Studies in 1969, inspiring similar programs at hundreds of other universities.
In 1692, a #Mexican priest complained to the Spanish king that there were too many #gay bars in #mexico city and #trans women in them were too tempting.
Still, the book "the flower and the scorpion" is really enlightening in ways that cannot be explained in a single toot.
The sexual history of #mesoamerica is so complex it defies all modern labels and expectations of modern western thinking, and involves heavy use of "sorcerer's speak" to talk about #sex (1/?)
Speaking of the #history of the #mexican#revolution , this page from "The Mexican Revolution: A Brief History with Documents" on how Pancho Villa tricked a city into capturing themselves reads like its from loony tunes #histodons would like
The sentence where they took the city without firing a single shot, if you ignore the massacre, is just surreal.
#White#Americans: As we near May 5 & a holiday massively co-opted by the #US, many of you/us should reconsider that sombrero & learn the history of #CincodeMayo. It celebrates an epic battle w/the French won against all odds & was revived by activists from the 1960s/70s #Chicano Movement because they viewed their struggle against the systemic #racism they faced in the #UnitedStates in the same light.
Making some delicious #Mexican red rice for #dinner tonight, and I’m reminded of this YouTube video where a “level 2 chef” makes some weird rice dish similar to a rice pilaf, and calls it risotto: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eED0pSMBgfA
Can I call this risotto too, then?! LOL #food#cooking
#Trump & allies planning militarized #MassDeportations, detention #camps
As president, Trump sought to use #military planes & bases for #deportation. Now, he and his allies are talking about a new effort that current & fmr ofcls warn could be impractical & dangerous.
#Trump pledges that as #president he would immediately launch “the largest domestic #deportation operation in American history.” As a model, he points to an Eisenhower-era program known as “Operation Wetback,”[🤮] using a derogatory #slur for #Mexican#migrants. The operation used #military tactics to round up & remove migrant workers, sometimes transporting them in dangerous conditions that led to some deaths.
One problem then as now is a failure of imagination, which overlooks potential connections across time between disparate events, especially in “faraway” places.
Another trap is false dichotomies. Nobody should pretend there’s a trade-off between restoring order at the US-#Mexican border and resisting Putin’s genocide in Ukraine, just as nobody would dream of either fighting cancer or developing Covid vaccines
