They are requiring that some people (not all, I guess, but I was one of them) enter their birthdate into their account info if they want to get paid. They're not sending out an email for this, I read about it on a FB group & went in to check my account & sure enough. 🤬 You have to click on Account, then you might see a message that there is a problem with your bank info.
The #IndieAuthor Spring Spectacular is where over 200+ authors across multiple genres dropped their prices to free or 0.99 between April 12th-15th, 2024! https://www.indievisibleevents.com
@AnnaFeatherstone@auslit@bookstodon
at least half of the self-published material I've read was trash, and I want the traditional publishing machine to exist to filter that out for me.
Do yourselves a good turn and make sure to follow Author Beware by @victoriastrauss
The most recent post is about #CityOwlPress, but there's wisdom that applies to all small presses:
"there is a kind of alchemical process where long-standing strains and stresses within a publisher...abruptly reach critical mass and boil to the surface in the form of a rush of complaints."
Via Writer Beware: in order to avoid scammers, you must understand how your industry actually works. This post tackles the oh, so tempting "we can help you get your book made into a movie!" scam.
Hey bookish folks, I'd love your help! How do you find new-to-you books to read?
I'm trying to figure out where to advertise my books now that I have a fourth book out ( https://buy.bookfunnel.com/vxvlyi6b0v ). I'm rather unknown so can't spend big $$ but it's hard to know where is best to find readers. And yet, it's hard to have a budget without readers, too!
Oh absolutely. And that's fair-- there's only so much space, after all. Most of the libraries that I've seen have my books in their catalogue only have the digital version, which makes total sense.
We've moved to the reading phase early! The judges were chomping at the bit and rattling the bars eager to get to the books, so we let them in a little early and they're already busy at their reading and sharing their excitement.
Congratulations to all 99 finalists! Check them all out at https://indiestorygeek.com/a/indie-ink-awards-2023
We have gathered 31 incredible indie authors with queer SFF books into a single sale. From January 17 to January 22, all of their books will be on sale at 99¢, but that’s not the best part.
We’ve put together a fun Buzzfeed-style personality quiz to help you find out which of these books’ queer characters you are!
It has always been our hope to not only support each other as indie authors, but extend that to the wider indie queer SFF community, and we’re thrilled to have put together this event!
So keep your eyes peeled on this space and #KrakenFriends , because this promises to be a fun time filled with good queer books.

PSA: pirating site giving away indie and self published books and asking for "donations". They even have a "mission" statement twisting Gaiman's position against DRM to justify pirating thousands of books
site address (minus spaces)
ocean of pdf.com
If your books are on kindle unlimited, amazon can ding YOU if anyone finds them elsewhere, including pirating sites.

Yay! I just made my annual #GoodReads reading goal! I cut it kind of close this year. I'm looking forward to another year of reading in 2024. I'm so grateful to all of my favorite #authors for creating so many fabulous books for me to read. Many are #indieauthors#indieauthor#mmromance@mmromance
#IndieAuthors - Something I have experienced, but haven't seen broadly spoken about online regarding #Facebook advertising: one you place an ad, you're going to get spam messages made to appear like messages from Facebook Ad Services warning you the ad violates Facebook's terms and will be taken down unless you click a provided link. The link goes to a legit-looking scammy page for collecting usernames and passwords.
Got a favorite #IndieAuthor or book, especially from marginalized communities or with great tropes? Nominate your favorite #IndieBooks from all genres for the awards that make the most sense for it. Is your favorite book not listed? It's easy to add it!
Latest book sales stats out of Australia thanks to Nielsen - 3 non-fiction books take out the top places in the top 10. Sales have held up reasonably well for 2023.
Some more takeaways here:
We moved to Mastodon late last year, and quickly became big fans. This is one of the reasons we set up #FediBookFair, to help #authors and #publishers to market their books.
We've also set up a Mastodon server for #IndieAuthors. If you know an author that would like to be here but thinks it's too complex, give them our details. We'll help them get set up - for free.
Indie authors - if you're denied entry to literary competitions and writing awards, grants and other opportunities, get in touch with the Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi) who is campaigning around the world for more fairness for independent and hybrid authors.
I’m giving away a standalone fantasy/alt-history m/m romance, The Uses of Illicit Art. Artisans have narrow magical powers in this pseudo-Victorian world, and Kit’s underwhelming Art is unlocking any door. Criminal gangs find it useful, though, so he’s hiding out to avoid them. Then bounty hunter Alexander Locke comes for him.
Don’t worry. Kit’s very good at locks 😉
Available at Smashwords free just for today (otherwise via #KoboPlus and #Scribd as well as at the usual retailers) — download it DRM-free and sideload it to any reader.
@wendypalmer@bookstodon grabbed it! I'm planning to pick up a Boox ereader soon and I'll be moving away from Amazon, so I'm starting a nice little Smashwords library.
